Default Yana Kunitskaya vs Tonya Evinger

Yana Kunitskaya vs Tonya Evinger ,who wins? Last time Yana made the story short but this is a rematch and Tonya has certainly learnt something from her loss.

That's not the way most commentators saw it. Mike England (ref) was the one who made it short. There was a series of pics posted somewhere (I'll try to recall where) that showed a different angle from most of the ones that were available online. These shots showed Tonya was out of the armbar, meaning she had her arm out past the elbow. Yana got it back when England distracted Evinger and made her move. That was the whole basis of Tonya's appeal to the Missouri Athletic Commission, which she won. The commission found the ref had interfered in the fight and affected the outcome. That's why she's still champ. I follow Tonya's twitter feed, where she posts a lot of thoughts and she hasn't said anything about having learned from the previous bout, other than to request a different referee.

It was especially significant because most athletic commissions are known for standing their ground and using petty rules and regs to hide behind. They rarely rule positively on a fighter's appeal. In fact, the very same commission ruled against Celine Haga (vs Amy Montenegro) in a case that seemed to me easily as clear cut as this one. If you didn't see the fight, it's on YouTube, I think and Fightpass for sure. Montenegro would probably have won in a decision but she was out cold, and I mean for several seconds before and after the horn at the end of the third round. The overwhelming view is that Haga won but the Missouri commission refused to overturn the decision. Even the dean of referees, Big John McCarthy weighed in and his view of it was unequivocal. If you're out at the horn, you lose. Period. He minced no words. So, even with the grand wazoo of refs on your side, it's still hard to get a commission to change their mind.

This fight was very disappointing. That first fight fluke really hyped up this rematch, but in reality, Yana has no business being in the same cage as Tonya.

I thought it was a good fight. Kunitskaya probably over-committed to getting a submission. She tried a lot of different things and probably stayed on the ground too long. Evinger is tough, wily and will take advantage of any mistake her opponent makes or any opening she gives her. Anyway, the fight had to be done, after what happened last time. The thing I'm watching for with Evinger is to see if the UFC will pick her up, maybe give her a chance to earn some half-decent money before her career ends. I think she deserves it. There are very few women left who've been in the game as long as Tonya. Miesha, Julie Kedzie, Kaitlin Young are all retired. Tara LaRosa competes in some grappling tourneys, I think. Roxanne Moddaferri is still fighting. Shayna Bazsler is a pro wrestler, Jennifer Howe, Debi Purcell and Becky Levi are all long gone from the sport - Tonya is an amazing testament to longevity, a true pioneer and deserves, IMHO, a little love from the UFC before she hangs it up.

I didn't think so. Yana showed a lot of grappling skills that she hadn't displayed much before. She had Tonya in some distress a few times. Tonya had to be very careful with her defensive technique to prevail in this fight.
