Story : [Only Registered Users Can See LinksClick Here To Register]

British computer users are being warned of a mass spamming attack that aims to encrypt their computer and extort a £540 ransom – in Bitcoins - to unscramble it.

The UK's National Crime Agency put out an alert on Friday afternoon warning that emails masquerading as communications from banks and financial institutions are being targeted at small and medium businesses, as well as millions of bank customers.

The emails have an attachment which appears to be a voicemail, fax, invoice or details of a suspicious transaction that is being queried.

But instead it is a malicious program that, if opened, will encrypt the user's hard drive and then begin displaying a countdown timer, while demanding the payment of 2 Bitcoins - an almost untraceable online currency. At present exchange rates, 2 Bitcoins costs about £540 - but the price has jumped in the past few weeks.

Solution: Stop pirating EXE programs instead of blaming websites

Hello, Bonnie 4444.
I had the same problem 4 or 5 weeks ago. Switch off your computer: restart, as soon as you see anything on your blank screen begin tapping the [F8] key. Go to safe mode and select a restart date and then press restart from an earlier date. It worked or me. I'm dumb as a rock on a computer. Good luck.

Advice ive heard from experts. Do NOT use internet explorer.
2. Set up an administrator account woith password and a non admin account. Anything that comes up will require the password since youre not using the admin account.

To get rid of anasty virus like that i think you can use a second computer to access the os without opening the os.

Not sure i havent had a problem with kaspersky, but mcaffee got me a virus that took total control of the system. Like i said, in windows8 set up an admin account but use an account without priveledges. So any system changes will require an admin login prompt. Guy on tech radio channel said itvwould prevent 95÷ of threats.

This is in response to Stymie 6 posts back. I got an email from some guy who said he was from Estonia. The subject line said "We are very close now" In bad English he said that when I clicked on a video infected with malwar it activated my computer camera and and recorded me "partying with myself". If I didn't send $650. USD in bit coin to a certain address in 24 hours they would send a split screen video of me and the video I was watching to everyone on my email contacts list. I ignored it and haven't heard any more about it. Is this a real thing? My contacts list is empty and I don't have a camera on my computer but this is unsettling.

It's a scam. There are even scarier ones than that going around now. Here's one I got a few days ago, from a spoofed email:

Hello!
I'm a member of an international hacker group.

As you could probably have guessed, your account (email) was hacked, because I sent message you from it.

Now I have access to you accounts!
For example, your password for (email) is [password used on one site]

Within a period from July 7, 2018 to September 23, 2018, you were infected by the virus we've created, through an adult website you've visited.
So far, we have access to your messages, social media accounts, and messengers.
Moreover, we've gotten full damps of these data.

We are aware of your little and big secrets...yeah, you do have them. We saw and recorded your doings on porn websites. Your tastes are so weird, you know..

But the key thing is that sometimes we recorded you with your webcam, syncing the recordings with what you watched!
I think you are not interested show this video to your friends, relatives, and your intimate one...

Transfer $700 to our Bitcoin wallet:
If you don't know about Bitcoin please input in Google "buy BTC". It's really easy.

I guarantee that after that, we'll erase all your "data"

A timer will start once you read this message. You have 48 hours to pay the above-mentioned amount.

Your data will be erased once the money are transferred.
If they are not, all your messages and videos recorded will be automatically sent to all your contacts found on your devices at the moment of infection.

You should always think about your security. We hope this case will teach you to keep secrets.
Take care of yourself.

People get really scared here because they see a password they recognize and believe the e-mail. The "hacker" got the password from one of many high-profile hacks that have resulted in password leaks (Yahoo, Adobe, Ashley Madison, VK) or even leaks from smaller sites that got hacked or sold to shady buyers.

While the email is a scam, if you see something that shows you a password you recognize, it's best to change it in all the places you potentially used it ASAP.

Thanks for that. What you just posted was very similar to what I received. It makes me feel a little more at ease. This thing has been hanging over my head for a little while.
