Default Re: W.O.M. mixed wrestling stories

The fellow who did WOM and I were the only two guys selling unillustrated – or almost unillustrated – mixed fighting stories in the ‘70s and early ‘80s. At least, he was the only other guy I knew of, and I think I was the only other guy he knew of. We were in contact. I did it under the name of BOS.

I started as a way of amusing myself. In those days, mixed fighting material was expensive for a young guy in college or something. And it seemed like every piece that one came across in the mainstream media was over in a flash; and, if in movies or on TV, couldn’t be repeated. I just wanted something longer.

There was a pretty good little market for our stuff, though we charged a fair amount. I never made a living at it, though. I don’t know if he did or not.
He stayed with it longer, and eventually started having illustrations.

I think maybe he was put out of business by the Internet. All of a sudden, lots of mixed stories were available for free, or for the price of a membership. I assumed there would no longer be a market for unillustrated stories. Maybe he could have kept going online with illustrations, but I’m not aware that he tried.

This was before the age of sessions, at least pretty much, and I wasn’t into that, anyway. But there were, in Los Angeles, at least, storefronts you could go into and pay a girl to wrestle. (Maybe there was only one.) I think, also, maybe a few girls were starting to free-lance. I remember him trying to convince me that these girls really could wrestle and box well enough to beat a guy, at least some guys. I didn’t believe him. I thought he had gone around the bend, letting his fantasies delude him. He finally gave up on convincing me. That’s when we lost touch.

I’ve always wanted to tell him he was right and I was wrong.

Thanks for your story Cashley216.

In going though some of my old boxes I came across an old order (from 1995!!). The typical W.O.M. photo sets sold for about $25-$30, while the story sets cost about $15 each. The thing that I remember about the photo sets is that they were printed as actual Kodak heavy stock type paper.

As you stated, this way before the internet, when material of this type was as easy to find.

I'm sure you all remember the company California Supreme. I don't think they have produced anything in years. Yet I still occasionally get mail from them advertising matches from at least 25-30 years ago. No idea why or who sends them, but I guess once you're on a mailing list, you're on it for life. lol

Kevin38, Thanks for the reminder about California Supreme. I think they had an active web-site as of a couple of years ago - but I haven't checked it in a long time (I'll have to add that to my "To-Do" list for later!)

At one point I used to purchase their illustrated story sets - which were quite good.

BTW, I did a check, and the W.O.M. photos I once had, are sadly gone. Wish now I had kept a few to post and to look back on.

The website for Cal. Supreme that I had bookmarked on an old PC is no more. Does anyone have a recent contact?
-Thanks

California Surpeme is owned and run by Ron Dvorkin in the Los Angeles area.He formed the business some time back in the early to mid 1960s.About a year ago i got a mailing from him announcing he was selling the business and his asking price was around 8 thousand dollars. That amount included his back catalog of videos,8mm film transfers, dvd duplicating equipment, magazines, etc.Back in the 90s he did get into some trouble with Gunther of DWW who said he was adding on some of his material to his own c.s. video tapes in order to fill out the tape to 2 hours and charge more money.I heard Dvorkin was doing that with other video companies as well.By now,Dvorkin has to be in his mid to late 80s.

This rings true. I got one of their tapes (Lisa Marie/Treena Collins, I think) and it also had a Lady Hawk gym match and some of what I later found to be a DWW match on the end. I wasn't complaining, but yeah, if you were a competitor then it's a bit naughty.

On the message board of his short lived DWW member website,Gunther ranted quite a bit about Dvorkin copying some of his work and adding it onto his own tapes, threatening to take him to court.Needless to say,Gunther later relented when he realized just how much his overseas legal fees would cost him. However, the message must have gotten thru to Dvorkin for he stopped tail ending his vhs tapes with clips from other producers.

This was back in the early 2000s, when I guess it was easier to pull that sort of thing with less social media around.

I ordered that tape directly from Cal Supreme in the USA, then a good five years later I get a Cal Supreme flyer in the post! I think it was the Aussie Lisa Marie, not Treena - let's not start that one again!
