Default KO or TKO

Do you have to be knocked out to have the fight end in KO? I watched the Paige Vanzant Bec Hyatt fight and they stopped it declaring Paige the winner by knock out. It didn't appear Bec was out so I thought it should have been by TKO.

TKO's are always announced as KO's in fights.

If you look at Paige's page on Sherdog it has KO for the Bec Hyatt fight and TKO for the Curran fight. Neither girl was knocked out so I was wondering why the difference. Unless the ref maybe thought Bec was out on the way down. That's the only thing I can think.

It's a tko if the fighter is taking too much damage and not responding or defending effectively. I.e. He just covers his face and gets pounded, or is in a bad position and unable to escape while taking damage. A KO is considered when the fighter is unable to defend herself or continue. It doesn't necessarily mean unconscious, but if they get rattled and just stop fighting intelligently, that's considered a KO. So Bec got tagged with that kick, went down , didn't protect her face, Paige jumped on her and started punching her head. Bec didn't try to cover up, so she was out of it, but not asleep. That is considered a KO. I think such things should be called tko's, but it's just the way they do it and it makes sense I guess.

Thanks for that. That makes sense to me. And I agree with you I think it should have been a TKO. I guess it's up to the refs discretion.

Ronda Rousey's TKO win over Sara McMann would fall under the bad call catagory
