I was dimly aware of men's magazines back in The Day but I don't think I ever saw any with the Amazonian covers I've seen here and elsewhere.

Did anyone here actually read them in their heyday?

If so, did the Amazon-themed stories tend to validate the male readers by having the hero convert the ladies to "the patriarchy?" Or did the ladies get to keep their femme-centric ways most of the time?

The covers might lead one to presume that "our thing" was a lot more prevalent in American male culture than I think it was. Of course, a lot of stuff in pop culture is no much "kinky" as "kink-curious," which also applies to the majority of commercial films about Amazon societies.

My memory -- quite clear -- is that the stories were always disappointing, that the art played to our kink, but the stories didn't. And that, yes, male dominance prevailed. These were "men's" magazines. Adventure, guns, war, girls, male heroes, all that.

My theory is that the reason we started seeing Amazonian covers is that the magazines were coming under attack as misogynistic and therefore became squeamish about showing women being victimized. So they started showing men being victimized, figuring that all they really needed to show to attract men was women in bikinis and such.

But the mags didn't get new writers, certainly not writers into our thing.

My theory might be wrong, but I can assure you you didn't miss anything. Always or almost always disappointing.

Great reminiscence. That would make the contents of the magazines more like the Mickey Spillane mysteries that probably appealed to roughly the same demographic. Spillane's KISS ME DEADLY pits Mike Hammer against a formidable female villain, but only so that the dick can find a really dramatic way to kill her.

Also, the publishers of the men's mags probably wouldn't have had any problems with rooking all those naughty f/m kinksters into shelling out for product that turned out to be more "sizzle" than "steak." Not that there would've been a lot of those buyers, but every little bit helps.

I don't think I've seen this cover posted to these forums.

John Russell Fearn wrote perhaps 50 stories featuring this character, starting in the 1940's.
Some of the "Golden Amazon" stories are now offered in E-form, and the first three in the series-- the only ones I have read (and can recommend)-- are offered in physical book form. No hot illustrations in the books though.
