Lesser recognised Pioneers
While Judell is rightly recognised as the real pioneer of female submission wrestling, closely followed by Beatrice, the others that were around in that era get little mention. I am thinking of the likes of Dr Ron and his California Supreme/Bellstone and Joan Wise and Jeff & Jo Bray on the east coast.
California Supreme and Joan Wise ventured more into the topless/sexy aspect while the Bray's stuck more to the same style as Judell. No doubt most of us have heard of Sherri Whitlow, and wish there was more material available about her matches. Another basically freelance wrestler who was active at that time was Bonnie Wine. She had a number of matches at the Bray establishment but also matches against other girls. A few pics added and I will add more in future threads. |

Re: Lesser recognised Pioneers
Wow! Such an amazing rare set of photos of Bonnie Wine! Thank you, Ian!
I would also name Linda Schultz among the lesser known pioneers. She wrestled with Judell, the video of which was posted [Only Registered Users Can See LinksClick Here To Register], as well as Bonnie Wine, and was generally active during that time. Photos from Bonnie Wine vs Linda Schultz:

Yes I have photos from the Linda v Bonnie match and will get to them, but I can only upload 10 photos per post. I will have to delve into my records and see what I can find. The other thing that gets overlooked is that I think I am right in saying that Robin of Les Femmes Fatales fame actually started her wrestling career at California Supreme. |

Re: Lesser recognised Pioneers
It is a while since I listened to the interview you organised with Judell, so I can't remember what she said in it, and it may have been different to what she sasid to me in a private discussion.
As for Robin, my understanding is that she started F/F wrestling at CS, but the work for Eric Stanton was her start in mixed matches. Added after 28 minutes: Bonnie vs Linda Last edited by Ian270446; 08-Oct-17 at 03:01. |
