Default Does Miesha get a champ's thread now?

Damn, what a smart fight by Miesha. It appeared Holly was not quite as well-conditioned as she'd been a few months ago vs Ronda.

As you analyze the finish, in retrospect, was it the right move to try to flip Miesha in an effort to escape the choke?

That choke. I wish it was me.

No. A lot of fighters have tried that escape only to get the choke sunk in deeper. Better strategy while on the feet would have been to try and turn into the opponent to release the pressure on the hold. But it didn't look like that would've worked here either.

Miesha was outclassed athletically, wasn't as strong, and wasn't as good with her footwork as Holly. But she won because she has the heart of a champion, found a weakness, and didn't give up trying to exploit it. That's the fourth time she's won a fight that way. And remember, she even had that choke on Ronda but couldn't hold it.

She's a deserving champion.

That's the way I saw it, too. Instead of keeping her chin in and forcing Miesha to expend a ton of energy trying to complete the lock, Holly seemed to panic and try for a quick out in what is such a low percentage play as you said you've seen so many times. In my estimation, Holly had to try to use the cage itself to her advantage in that position.

That choke looked deep, having watched the finish again ,I think it was a last ditch effort from holly to flip meisha off. I liked the way meisha sunk her hooks in deep, thrusting her pelvis forward to stretch Holly's body out while choking her out.
Terrible position for holly to be in, that choke is not called a lion killer for nothing.
Meisha is hot

Holly seemed to be fighting in fear of the takedown, looked a little stiffer and more tentative than usual. Didn't throw a lot of volume and Miesha fought very intelligently, picking her moments to shoot and not charging in on Holly like Ronda did. Holly is a counter striker and thrives on people coming to her. Even in a striking battle, Holly doesn't throw a lot of volume and can be quite boring to watch if people don't take it to her.

Obviously Holly doesn't have the grappling background and was in a lot of trouble whenever Miesha got her off her feet, or was able to take her back. You can't play catch up with that, just like Ronda/Miesha/Carla, etc can't play catch up with the level of striking Holly and Joanna possess.

When you're in your mid-30s though, sometimes a fighter turns up and they just don't have the spring in their legs anymore, or the reflexes they used to and Holly is getting up there in age. Age catches up to everyone. IMO Holly reached the zenith of her career in defeating Ronda. That's the height where the wave broke.

Now, if Ronda wants to come back in and fight Miesha, like it or not, that's what's going to happen. Ronda is still running WMMA and what the princess wants, she gets.

The question then comes down to whether it'll be more of the same, or has Miesha bettered herself to the point where she genuinely has a shot at beating Rousey and has Rousey's skills (like everyone else at GFC - Ellenburger, Browne, etc) diminished under the tutelage of Edmond Tarverdyan? When they first fought in SF Ronda was still doing most her training at Hayastan, with more of an emphasis on her strengths - grappling.

In 2015, Ronda's body noticeably "melted" akin to the way that Belfort and Overeem's
did.

Look at her body from her strikeforce days. She went from looking hard, cut and beastly to soft, smaller and pudgey. It was enough to plow through Correia (a fight that never should've been sanctioned) but not Holly.

Not my call, but I would rather make Ronda go through Holly to earn another crack at the belt. It leaves Miesha on the shelf all summer, but I think they know that the mouths on both Ronda and Miesha will make this next match a possible PPV sales bonanza.

I agree Miesha did fight a very smart and showed lots of heart hanging in there and waiting for an opening.
Also I agree that Holly and Ronda should fight to see who gets to get in the cage with the new champ.

If Ronda isn't coming back till October for Hollywood bs I say let's get holm Tate 2 underway it was an entertaining fight! Or have Tate fight someone else, a worthy title defense. I suggest cat zingano, those two had a bloody brawl a few years back. Or maybe rousey will return sooner, and we can have holm rousey 2, which I'd prefer to rousey v Tate 3.

Chael Sonnen said that he sees Ronda returning for UFC 200 (vs Tate), but then again, he is Chael Sonnen.
