She's really built and skilled for her age. I wouldn't be surprised to see her climb the ranks of MMA.

New co-ed policy could affect postseason play for Catholic schools, including Delone

A new policy implemented by the Harrisburg Diocese prohibits all co-ed participation in three sports

A new rule regarding co-ed participation in sports, implemented by the Diocese of Harrisburg, could have postseason implications on local Catholic schools, including Delone Catholic.

The policy, passed in July by Bishop Ronald Gainer, states that no Catholic school, parish, Catholic youth organization or club athletes shall wrestle someone of the opposite sex. Also, females will not be permitted on Catholic school football or rugby teams.

The main motivation for such a rule is safety and modesty, said Joseph Aponick, director of communications for the Diocese of Harrisburg.

"These various sports programs exist in our schools for the values that they can teach, not just for the possibility of athletic competition," Aponick said. "This rule supports and emphasizes the norms of conduct, decorum and moral discipline we wish to foster at all times in our young adults."

The biggest implication could be in wrestling where a Catholic school athlete would have to forfeit any match scheduled with a female.

Hypothetically, a Delone wrestler could be undefeated and in the state tournament but would have to immediately forfeit his next match if it is against a female.

"The Diocese believes that it is incompatible with its religious mission and with its efforts to teach Gospel values to condone competitions between young men and women in sports that involve substantial and potentially immodest physical contact," Gainer said in his letter introducing the policy.

Many Catholic school athletic directors were at a meeting in Harrisburg when informed of the new policy. The reception was mostly negative among the directors and coaches, Delone Catholic athletic director Dave Lawrence said.

"Nobody was too happy about it because it's not fair to the kids," Lawrence said. "A kid could be in districts or states, but they'd have to forfeit to a girl."

The Diocese's education offices in Harrisburg have not received any negative feedback since the announcement, Aponick added.

Outside of those three sports, Catholic schools in the YAIAA join public schools in following PIAA regulations, according to YAIAA director George Shue.

PIAA policies allow co-ed participation in sports, but a girls' team with a boy on the roster cannot qualify for postseason play.

The only sport in the YAIAA that would be affected by the new rule would be wrestling, Shue said, and the league averages fewer than 10 female wrestlers per year.

Still, the timing of the new policy confused the athletic directors, Lawrence said.

"I don't know why all of a sudden it came about," he said. "To my knowledge, nothing happened to trigger it."

Lawrence said he didn't know if a potential situation for the Diocese's rule would even come up, but if it did, it would be an unfair disadvantage for a student who had worked hard.

"No one agreed with it," Lawrence said. "But we don't have a choice. Whatever the Harrisburg Diocese says, we have to follow."

I don't believe boys should not compete against girls where body to body contact
is involved. such as wrestling and football. keep in mind this is my personal opinion
only. and i'm not referring to anyone or anything posted here. I my self go over most stories and photos here. just there are guys who want to see women lose to girls
