Is it time for the old battle-dog Tonya Evinger to hang up the 4oz mitts?

After riding a 6-year, 11 fight winning streak prior to signing with the UFC, Evinger has since gone 0-3 in the premier organisation. Her most recent defeat coming at the hands (and elbows) of Lina Lansberg last night in Stockholm.

I must say I was a little surprised by the result of this fight. Evinger was the favourite coming in while Lansberg was coming off a loss to Kunitskaya (whom Evinger out-grappled and beat in Invicta).

The fight was mostly clinching and grappling. Lansberg landed a good elbow in round 1 that cut the American and was then able to take her down/get the better of scrambles to put Evinger on her back and further open the cut until her face was awash in blood.

Sometimes weird things happen when a fighter has the hometown advantage whereas other fighters don't travel well. I'd never really paid much attention to Lansberg before, just seeing her as a meddling, ageing journeywoman but this win showcased some clear progression in her skills and put some momentum behind her.

UFC 238 tonight is a big night for WMMA. There's 5 fights on the card.

Valentina Shevchenko vs. Jessica Eye
Tatiana Suarez vs. Nina Ansaroff
Karolina Kowalkiewicz vs. Alexa Grasso
Xiaonan Yan vs. Angela Hill
Joanne Calderwood vs. Katlyn Chookagian

Shevchenko/Eye is the co-main event for the 125 title. Jessica will be a heavy underdog. Does she have a realistic chance of winning? IMO, not really. It will be a huge upset if she can take the belt from Valentina. Ive been thinking about this fight and watching a few of Jessica's past fights to see if there's anywhere she might have an edge and honestly I feel I'm clutching at straws.

One bad habit of Jessica's is that she leaves her hands low when exiting exchanges, and Valentina is a very good counter striker. I think this will be the story of the first 2 or 3 rounds, if it lasts that long; Valentina countering Eye to get ahead on the scorecards. It may very well turn into an easy 50-45 decision win for VS that way.

It'll be interesting to see what kind of pace this match is fought at. Jessica likes to throw combos and was finishing a lot of her combos against Chookagian with kicks. Eye has been, by all accounts, doing a lot of wrestling to prepare for this fight, but we've never seen her employ a grappling heavy style. She has however, been out-grappled in most of her losses, namely by Tate, Pena and McMann at 135. It's hard to see her suddenly having great success employing a grappling heavy style.

If Jessica is to have any chance, I see it coming via a hail mary submission or work rate in the later rounds. We saw Valentina slow down in her last fight and used takedowns against Joanna to stall when Joanna was beginning to outwork her in terms of volume. I'm not sure Jessica has that kind of cardio though. Ultimately, I just don't see Jessica having the athleticism, skill or class to truly threaten Valentina in this fight.

Great analysis! I like both these ladies, but the Bullet deserves to be a heavy favorite. But how about the rest of that card. Five chick fights in one night! Can't complain about the UFC on this one.

One for the ages. I don't think I've ever seen anyone stay knocked out that long.
