Default MMA and Muay Thai

Sorry if I am asking a foolish question but I really don't know the exact difference between MMA and Muay Thai? Can someone please explain it.

I'm not an expert and I have very little knowledge of muay thai, but the rules of action and the scoring are very different between the two sports.

I already posted this in another thread today, but assuming you have seen some MMA fights, I would suggest watching this muay thai fight between Cyborg and Jorina Baars. You'll notice that whenever there is a clinch, the ref comes over pretty quickly to break them up and whenever there is a trip or anything that looks like a takedown, he stands them back up. Knockdowns count in the scoring, slips do not. The ref may give a standing count if he believes a fighter needs to recover from a knockdown. There are no jiu-jitsu type finishing moves, but the striking is often quite beautiful to watch.

Muay thai is a striking-only sport, MMA - striking and grappling.
