Default Caution on Chokes

I was reading a news article today entitled "18 yr old BJJ world champ suffers stroke during training" and a thread on the news on r/bjj (link below), there are many stories from guys that have suffered a stroke or know someone that this has happened and how it may be related to being choked out during training or a match. We do train lots of chokes (this week we have been practicing Guillotine to D'arce choke transition with lots of repetitions) and this is a reminder to tap quickly before a choke is too tight, since it may lead to carotid dissection/Transient Ischemic Attack. Also someone that is overweight or with high blood pressure is at risk. I just wanted to share this as a remainder that there is always a risk to being choked out too often.
With some many inexperienced grapplers out there, the risk may be higher. (holding a choke too long, squeezing too hard etc).
To those concerned, TAP quickly ! to the one's that enjoy KO's, be aware of the risks. (you may not die, but end up with some paralysis).
Never stop enjoying what you love, but be safe

It's something I enjoy, though I never ask for it to be done. Before a session I always consider her skill/experience to decide how quickly I will be tapping when she applies holds.

Got a session coming up with Sativa in which she is going to do some KO's. Think I'll keep the limit to one, though! Apparently she is very well trained, which is reassuring!

Small blood vessel hemorrhage, which alters the surrounding brain tissue. Usually millimetric, but repeated injury may bring additive deficit (cognitive, concentration, movement disorders).

Vertebral or carotid dissection: This is very dangerous. I've seen hemiplegic youngsters from a ball to the neck. The inner layer of the artery peels off and occludes it.

Stroke due to other big vessel problems: Cholesterol plaques, unbeknownst anatomic variations that lead to non-functional arterial backup.

Bradycardia - arrythmia - cardiac arrest from stimulus to the carotid sinus: This is one of the reasons a choke works, but if your heart's wiring is faulty you may need a jumpstart.

Seizures (which, if mishandled, may be fatal).

I don't know how much of the blood flow to the brain is cut off during a blood choke, so I cannot say if the choke itself can kill the brain or just leave it in power saving mode.

Involuntary oxygen choke, trachea collapse, fracture of the larynx: You cannot breathe and die.

ÖOr neither of those. My 1st KO happened decades ago, via legs belonging to a lady who knew exactly what she was doing, both when she did it and helping me back afterward. So it was an ideal way to learn I could handle it when it was 'properly done.'

Putting yourself in a situation where you know beforehand there is potential for you to be knocked out multiple times is surely not the smartest thing in the world but sometimes the danger and potential for disaster is part of the excitement. There are some guys who just enjoy tempting fate and that's just the way it is. To me it's a miracle we haven't heard about any guy's death during a session or from some girl's headscissor because it could very easily happen and I think it's only a matter of time. Personally I'm not ready to meet my maker just yet but I happen to be killed or seriously injured by a female's legs then so be it. For now I'll just continue to take my chances and deep down I feel as though I would be in much greater danger driving a race car or piloting a single engine airplane and people do that stuff every day too.

Let's not forget the legal/moral implications for the other party involved too... very different than someone paragliding alone in the forest. BJJ academies, MMA gyms and tournaments will make us sign a document releasing them for any liability in case of serious injury, there is a reason for it. Safe play is always better, even BDSM dungeons have safe words/signs/rules to avoid any serious consequences for everyone involved.

I have always felt it was a completely crazy thing to do, and have no idea why anyone would encourage it. It's the thing I fear - that I might get put out but my opponent being so used to subdued males might not realise.
I always make it quite clear that I have no interest in, or desire to be, knocked out. It would probably put me off forever.
