Boxing in the 80-ies
A report, probably from early 80-ies or late 70-ties.
Dear Editor I have once seen an amateur boxing match, woman against man. Both boxers was in their late teens. They came out of the ring after warming up. After the obligatory introductions, they took off their robes and waited for the start of the fight. The young man, I had seen him in a match before, and he appeared to be a gifted boxer. He was dressed his club suit black shorts, red shirt and white boxing boxing boots. He saw fit out and moved eagerly in his ring corner. His female opponent was about an inch shorter but heavier. She went in two weight classes above him. A sort of handicap, as I understand it. Her long dark brown hair sticking out in a braid from her head. She wore yellow shorts and a yellow t-shirt, dark tights(!) and black boots. It was noticed well that she is also a bar chest protector for the T-shirt. The young woman looked slightly nervous as she stood in his corner. The young man moved like a boxer usually do and looked very focused. The bell rang for the first round. Both the man and the woman moved quickly towards the center of the ring, she went with the left ahead, jab when he attacked and drove her back before she met up and defended herself. It was from the outset a surprising fierce struggle between the aggressive young man and, it turned out, tough woman. She defended herself well against his attacks and countered well. It was an intense and surprising even fight. Ronden ended with a proper duel in a corner where she received a series of hard body punches before the bell sounded. Both had taken and given well in the first the round and I must admit, she was talented. The young man looked to be full of confidence as he sat upright in his corner but the young woman was reclining in her. She still looked tough. I believe that he had the upper hand in the match. His aggressiveness was better although she was standing well against him and fought well. The second round was not long until they went into a clinch after a violent clash. The referee broke it up and they went again into a hard blow exchange in the middle of the ring. The blows could be heard well and she backed off slightly bu t fought hard. She also received their blows which ended with him was hit and went down for the count. There was silence in the courtroom. She quickly went to a neutral corner and from my place in the room, she stood with his back to me and looked at her dropped opponent. Slowly he went up. The young woman looked strong from behind and to my surprise I saw that her dark nylons had seams on. (Sic!). I was totally perplexed by it. Her opponent came up and he looked shaken. The referee checked him and he nodded. I thought he look shaken, but the referee wiped his gloves and let him continue. The young man was attacked directly, and they met in a blow exchange. It turned out immediately that he was hurt did not have a chance. The match should have been broken after the knock down. She took over the fight and he quickly easy prey for her. She pushed him back and it was clear he was unable to so against her attacks. The audience shouted to stop the match and before the referee could intervene, she homed in a number of punches. Again there was a silence for a few seconds. The young woman stood and looked down at the young man who was totally eliminated on the floor under her before the referee push her to the neutral corner. The referee did not count but immediately signaled that the match was over. He bent over the motionless young man on the ring floor and freed him from the protections. The young woman was helped off with her head and her long hair was released. With a big smile she walked around the ring with raised arms. Her male opponent lay still on the floor for a few minutes before he regained consciousness. Eventually, he was helped up and out of the ring. The referee raised the young woman's arm. The result was announced as her victory by a KO in round second I was very hesitant to let a woman standing in a boxing match against a man. Definitely, I had not thought she would have a chance to win even though she was in two weight classes above him. She seemed strong and physically fit and that she would stand throughout the fight might not have been surprising. But as this young woman stood against the young man's attacks and defeated him, as clearly as she did was nobody thought before the game. It is not possible to determine how good she really was boxing in terms of a longer match when this match was barely one and a half rounds. What I could see was that she was surprised with a good technical and powerful boxing. Her male opponents, however, was slightly improved. Both received a lot of beating during the fight but despite that she had a good gard did he delivered more clean hits. The match, however, was too short to make a proper evaluation. Had it gone all out rounds, I am convinced that the young man had won. Now was not the case so, which surprised all of us spectators. Manfred Emilsson Stockholm |

Got to love that sexism. "She wouldn't have won if it wasn't for the fact that she won."

Re: Boxing in the 80-ies
The text is Swedish, why I suppose this must have taken part in Sweden
It sounds that this has taken part around 1980. It is sounds to be an excerpt from a sport (boxing?) magazine. But as I just have got this excerpt from a friend some years ago and as this been written some years ago, I can't say which magazine. This sounds to be a fact. It is published so even the editor of this magazine must have think this is fact. |
