Re: GLOW Netflix comedy
I've now finished with it, regrettably. Imo it was extraordinarily well executed for the story the producers wanted to tell.
Without spoiling much, the way they handled being able to show a good match early on even though the story hadn't advanced to a place where that shouldn't have been able to happen yet was very clever. Also, the usage of new characters while making it easy for fans to spot the inspirations for them was very well done. The actors involved clearly enjoyed making the show, a process mirroring the real life history of the show (a point I'm not nearly the 1st to make). Besides the casting being excellent, there's a great double-take moment for Mad Men fans that happens during the show. I'm sure we'll be getting a 2nd season in about a year's time and that day will be circled on my calendar for sure. |

Re: GLOW Netflix comedy
I have watched 5 episodes, really really enjoying it thus far. It has a solid cast, good acting, it's funny as hell... Defo worth the wait, i didnt expect to much but it has suprised me on how good it really is, worth the ratings it's getting. Lets hope more writers/producers jump on the hype this show has garnered, we may not see a season 2 (highly likely though, it is netflix, the ladies wrote and produced orange is the new black and they got 4 seasons out of that and she was only sent to jail for 9 months lol)

Re: GLOW Netflix comedy
Ummm I just finished the season. Look, it was a fun watch, otherwise I would've ditched it after episode 1. But ultimately, it really lacked creativity and originality. It was just another generic comedy, unoriginal storylines that have been done so many times in different contexts, not the best cast (the female leads could've been much better).
I would go into detail but I don't want to "spoiler alert". It just could have been done so much better. If you've seen the documentary of GLOW you will know that it was a great real story. The way they handled the story of Liberty Bell and her husband was just weak and half hearted and quite shallow. That's how I would describe the prodcuers treatment of a potentially great context. Wimsical, fun to watch, but they took an original context and just overlayed it with unoriginality. |

Re: GLOW Netflix comedy
Watched all 10 episodes again over the past week. Thought it was great, again. Yes, there were parts I didn't like, but I really got into the characters. It's funny, the wrestling was secondary, which is the reason why I wanted to watch in the first place. Hopefully there will be a season 2.

Re: GLOW Netflix comedy
The series needs a few episodes to find a rhythm, a sense of purpose, but this slow crescendo manages to reveal a personal affirmation of the women involved, without avoiding the ambiguities of the show. And despite some clumsiness and pitfalls, the wrestling is a way to do something meaningful, to go back to themselves : they recognize sadness, regrets, frustrations to build a moment which is both an acceptation of vulnerability (the fierce emotions) and a revelation of a hidden self (the physical moves).
There is not a lot of pure wrestling sequences but i loved how trust, of oneself and toward others, is a key to find self-expression, to transcend fear. The finale is definitely an achievement as it brings both nostalgia and relief. |

Re: GLOW Netflix comedy
The show was really a lot better than it could have been. There were two episodes that were excellent. Episode 3, when the wrestlers try to choose their personas, but are overruled by the director, and told to stick to stereotypes, was hilarious. It was one of those "Oh, shit, they actually said that on tv," kind of moments. Also, the episode where the black wrestling tag team convinced the old biddies to drop their personas and instead wrestle in more controversial costumes was as funny as tv gets.
Alison Brie was really impressive. If you've seen her in "Community" as Annie "Adderol" Edison, or in "Mad Men" as "Pete's Wife" you'll be surprised by the physical changes she underwent in order to play this role. She really added on some serious muscle to her slim figure. It's her best role since "Bojack Horseman." |
