Default So proud of Rose

Just watched the Rose/Joanna fight. While I'm a huge fan of both of them I favor Rose a little bit. Though I have to admit I was one of the many that thought her first win against Joana was a fluke. Nothing against Rose I just had previously thought Joana was by far the best fighter in the division. Rose proved me wrong and I'm so proud of her. What made me even more nervous was that I heard before the fight Rose said she was going punch her in the face, take her back, and choke her out. The last girl I heard say that was Meisha Tate before she fought Ronda and we all now how that worked out. Rose wasn't able to follow through on her prediction but what she did was even more impressive standing toe to toe with a girl that was supposed to be the better striker. I'm so glad Rose proved me wrong...AGAIN.
Unfortunately another of my favs, Felice Herrig didn't fare as well. I didn't see that fight but I knew it was going to be a tough one for her.

The major advantage that Rose has over many other women is that she can take a punch. I agree with those who consider Joanna to be the superior technical striker, but because Rose can take those punches, it ends up working on the psyche of her opponent: "I keep hitting her, but she's not hurt - wtf do I do?!"

I did not buy the show and I know it's not women's action, but I was most surprised that Khabib's fight went the distance. I will need to see that one for myself, too.

An impressive performance...and I think Rose was in the right state of mind going into this fight : not too overconfident, not too humble, not carried away by the context of a rematch with still a lot to prove. She was ready and focused.

And the impressive thing is she beat her at her own game - striking.

It was a great fight.

Joanna gave a much better account of herself in this fight and it still seems like a bitter pill for her to swallow, but Rose proved the main reasons she 'caught' Joanna the first time are still very much valid. Her movement and ability to control distance, spring in and out are on another level. I think she outclassed Joanna for 3 of the 5 rounds unquestionably.

Joanna may have statistically landed more strikes in each round, but all the quality was coming from Namajunas. She buckled and staggered Joanna numerous times and clearly did more damage, especially with her left hook which over time caused Joanna's eyeball to be swollen shut. I don't recall Joanna snapping Rose's head back like we saw Rose do to her. I think most of Joanna's punches were just grazing shots or too weak to be considered effective. Rose's defence was superior and she was landing the cleaner, more effective strikes.

49-46 seems a bit of a stretch. Joanna's work-rate was definitely higher in the 3rd and 4th rounds with much less output from Rose. A lot of people seemed to have it 48-47 but a clear win for Rose nonetheless.

It'll be interesting to see whether Joanna moves up to 125 next.

I agree it should have been 48-47 Rose. Her victory opens up the division to interesting matches against Claudia, Jessica Andrade and Karolina.

Joanna has never been the kind of fighter that changes the course of a fight with a single punch, or even a small group of punches. She accumulates damage over the course of a fight - punch after punch after debilitating punch than her opponents can't stop from hitting them. And eventually they either go down or at least finish the fight looking distinctly worse for wear.*

Rose skipped that whole cumulative damage aspect of Joanna's game by simply not allowing Joanna to successfully land many punches. Her footwork and head movement is simply excellent. She landed more meaningful punches than Joanna did by a large margin.

Joanna's best offense during the fight was kicks to Rose's leg. She did quite a bit of damage there. But she wasn't able to win more than 2 rounds, IMO. Very easy 3-2 decision. The judges all had it 4-1 for Rose, which I don't agree with, but it didn't change the obvious outcome.

*Jessica Andrade was the exception. Joanna dominated the hell out of her, but Jessica wasn't really damaged at all by Joanna's punches. Andrade's chin seems almost invincible in 115.
