For future, maybe think about browsing in a VM like VMware player. The latest version supposedly has a seamless mode so the virtual app windows run side-by-side with your normal ones.

Which OS and browser was it?

I started this thread, and when I got it, I was using XP Pro ( service pack 2 ) and IE 8.

It sounds like a combination - computer hijack and virus! That is a typical conflict when at "Adult" designated websites, including torrent websites. I had this problem last summer. I downloaded - "Law & Order SVU Seas 1" from a website for free! The video's played fine......however, I had noticeable occurences in losing control on mouse at the start. At startup each time after the computer booted, the first episode would automatically play!! The growth in pop ups was constant when on the net. I tried to burn the series so I could delete, which it would not do! It would not burn and could not delete from hard drive (C Drive). This works similarly to some "Trial Based" software. Some may burn without your knowledge on C-Drive. Also, in many cases they share a file and if uninstalled will cause this to delete. Other programs afterward will not operate properly!!

In short, a friend that is a programmer told me that depending on the extent - it would be advisable to reformat your hard drive! Due to piracy and its leniency in not being enforced, many producers are utilizing programmers to embed in their video a bug/virus. Pirated software and video's today are in high growth across the internet, and people are experiencing: crashes/lockups, data disappears - music/videos, multiple drives infected - due to saving/transfer of pirated, etc.

This programmer friend of mine also indicated that it would be advisable as well to have external hard drives disconnected when surfing the net. The "Entertainment - Fortune 500" also utilize tracking software! Keep in mind "Law Enforcement" utilize the same. A little thing called an IP Address identifies each and every one of us.

Windows & Apple utilize log files which can't be deleted/cleaned unless reformatted. These files remains for the life of the computer. Some may confuse "Disk Cleanup" with this and doesn't realize they are temp files!! It contains: document source/destination, websites visited, etc!
((This is how they catch the "Child Porn" violators))

Experienced virus fighter here;

In short, there's easy ways around all of this. So, we all like to go around on some dirty parts of the internet, obviously, and it's not safe and can lead to getting a serious threat on your computer. To be honest, the only way you can get your computer jacked like that is if it is heavily infected for a prolonged period of time (probably months), and it's not hard to be heavily infected and not notice. Just take a few simple precautions and your computer will never run into these problems.

Purchase a very legitimate antivirus, like Norton, as well as it is in your best interest to also purchase a legitimate program for tuning up your computer and keeping it in solid performance so that viruses and other things of that nature cannot be easily hidden among the BS, clutter and fragmentation of old, poorly-kept computers. Once you have these things, try to get full use of them every few weeks; open them up before bed once in a while, look for their 'extensive searches' and 'all in one utilities' and such, and run some of those. Keep up with this simple stuff, and you will never lose your computer to malware.

These are all potential ways to fix your computer. I have used safemode and a Microsoft stand alone cleaning tool called msert.exe I will run for several hours to clean. It did work where I had a similar issue that did not allow me to do a full boot. Most infections will allow you to boot to safemode (not sure if you tried this). Another good cleaner is ComboFix.exe, another stand alone cleaner. These are both extreme cleaner tools but may work to at least get you back when all else fails.

I had that virus and below is how I got rid of it nice and clean without any third party app.

Step 2 is the key. If you know nothing about computer it's a good opportunity to start learning at least this bit. Legit Start Up Tasks come from your computer's drivers and applications you've installed and the company name is mentionned next to it (e.g. Intel, Adobe, ...), if you can't identify one Google its name.

1. Restart in safe mode
2. Find the new virus Start Up Task (use command Msconfig).
3. Delete the Start Up Task after having noted down the directory and program associated with it.
4. Delete the associated register (use command Regedit).
On Windows it's in key_Local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\SharedTool\MS Config\startupreg.
5. Find and delete the program and directory identified at step 2 (use Windows Explorer).
6. Find and delete other non system directories that were created at the same date and time (Windows Explorer).
7. Delete all cookies (Web browser or Windows Explorer)
8. Restart your computer in normal mode, update your antivirus app and do a full computer scan.

Et voila

Thanks everybody for all the tips, I'm gonna print out a hard copy in case I ever get stumped.

I just got this ransom virus again today. I don't think I caught it here, It was hours since I visited. But I was surfing to unfamiliar websites, and I look at the screen and see that faggots fbi screen. I immediately did a hard shutdown, rebooted into safe mode and ran malwarebytes quick scan. It found 3 problems, a 'MigAutoplay.exe' file, and a registry entry for it, and an 'o.exe' file. I let malewarebytes delete them successfully.
