A.
Wow, thanks for the info about SPEACA. Never heard about it before. Sounds very interesting. Researching it atm. Velvet said in one of her interviews that 60% of SPEACA's members were men.

Here's Velvet, also from 1979

It would be interesting to know what kind of videos Deena did for Velvet

Thanks Zweig. It is great to hear that. She visited my house in Richmond a couple times starting in the very early 80's. (Was it Deena Zarra who called these her "Whistle Stop Tours?") She was one of the first professional women that I wrestled. I had been a little concerned since 2001 since when I visited her apartment to wrestle another lady one time I noticed how close to the World Trade Towers she lived. She was big and strong, no doubt, had a wonderful body scissors, and had a wonderful personality.
It seems to me that one time when she was visiting me I lent her and a friend of hers a car one afternoon. She was recounting what happened when they asked for directions from a passerby in town. "And do you know what happened," she asked me incredulously, "do you know what happened?" "No, what?" I replied. "They told me!" Deena was so genuinely surprised by the simple southern hospitality compared to New York City in those days. Perhaps this will date the reference; we saw "Stand by Me" in a movie theatre together as it had just come out.

Deena Zarra did die from cancer that she thought she contracted due to her proximity to the World Trade Center buildings. Robin told me this herself.

I emailed Robin today and she confirms that Deena Zarra died of a brain tumor a few years ago. Robin began her wrestling career with Deena and wrestled for her a few years before going independent.
