So I've been hearing for awhile that Mackenzie is the next Ronda Rousey and many have said she will be better than Ronda.
The consensus among many seems to be that she is the best submission fighter in the world. Does anyone find it kind of disappointing that in her three MMA fights so far only one submission?(I admit it was one of the best submissions I've ever seen). Conversely in Ronda's first three fights she won by arm bar at 23,24 and 57 seconds. Yet I'm still hearing people say see I told you she was the next Ronda after her most recent win. Seems a little premature to me. Are these just Ronda haters?

MMA is more about striking now. Everything is changing.

Comparisons like this are always dumb. They're completely different fighters that started their careers in totally different environments. Dern is really good, in 4 years this might be worth thinking about.

Yeah this is what I meant. Not about striking specifically, but things are cyclical, any sport can look a certain way and then change and then years after that circle back in some aspects.

I agree the comparison is rather pointless. I think I'd probably say the same about any comparisons to Rousey. She was a unique athlete, at a unique time in the sport. I don't think those conditions will ever be duplicated again. I hate the catchphrase "perfect storm" but it really seems to apply to the short but spectacular career of Ronda Rousey.

As the skill level of female MMA athletes keeps growing, it will no longer make sense to keep drawing comparisons with Rousey. Right now the fact is the very mention of her name in a headline generates more clicks so writers continue to do what they can to work her name into a story. Hopefully that tendency will start to fade away soon.

I always found it so ridiculous the Rousey vs. MMA fighter. Would any other MMA fighter need 3 rounds to beat Tate? No. They wouldn't need 4 min and 50 seconds to beat Liz Carmoushe. Rousey was never ***that*** good. She was great against weak competition. Now that the competition has caught up, she was exposed.

And I always said, she was better at PR than fighting. (And btw, she's still a very good fighter, just not what people thought she was)

Dana White Says Mackenzie Dern is on UFC Radar: ‘She’s a Little Bad Ass’
By Tristen Critchfield
Mar 17, 2017

Mackenzie Dern has already been tabbed as a future star in mixed martial arts, and that potential hasn’t escaped the notice of UFC President Dana White.

“We’ve been checking her out, yeah,” White told TMZ Sports. “She’s a little bad ass.”

Dern is currently competing under the Legacy Fighting Alliance banner and has thus far compiled a 3-0 record in her burgeoning career. The 23-year-old is coming off a unanimous decision triumph over Katherine Roy at LFA 6 on March 10. Meanwhile, her omaplata rear-naked choke of Montana Stewart in her sophomore outing ranked as one of 2016’s best submissions. Dern is expected to make her home at strawweight, although her most recent appearance vs. Roy was contested at a 120-pound catch-weight.

Dern’s entry into MMA was celebrated in large part because of her lengthy list of accomplishments in grappling, which include world titles at the 2015 ADCC Submission Wrestling World Championship at 132 pounds and the 2015 World Jiu-Jitsu Championship at 130 pounds. Dern is a black belt under her father, Wellington “Megaton” Dias.

Still, White isn’t quite ready to declare Dern the sport’s “Next Big Thing.”

“You never know how good somebody’s gonna be until they get in there and start fighting the best in the world,” White said. “Obviously she has a lot of potential. Will she be another Ronda? I don’t know.”

As for Rousey, the former UFC bantamweight queen recently wrapped up filming a guest spot on the NBC series “Blindspot.” According to White, Rousey enjoyed the role and could appear on future episodes of the show.

“I think if this thing goes for another season I think she wants to stay there. She loves it,” White said. “She had a great time. She said the cast and everyone involved is awesome. She’s having a good time.”

Rousey hasn’t fought since suffering a 48-second technical loss to reigning champion Amanda Nunes at UFC 207 on Dec. 30. Previously, the Olympic judoka took more than a year off after losing her title to Holly Holm in a second-round knockout loss at UFC 193

Ronda might be the most overrated fighter since Laila Ali.
How was Laila Ali overrated?
