Default The importance of wrestling skill in a video.

Recently I got two fully competitive mixed wrestling videos from two different studios in which all four participants knew how to wrestle. And I mean really wrestle, freestyle/bjj/judo etc. The two guys, even though they lost, they didn't tap to silly body/head scissors so easily. They knew how to break a hold, they knew how to move around. In my opinion this made the videos so much better. I appreciate a real struggle, even if the competitors are not really skilled, but when I see that they both know what they are doing, that they both know how to wrestle, they make a quality video there. And it's sad that the vast majority of competitive mixed wrestling videos include competitors who are essentially clueless, either both of them or just the male.

What do you think ? Is it important for you to see two competitors who are really skilled, or are you content as long as they try hard ?

It's a big problem in the industry that most don't know how to wrestle or grapple. If both know actual moves the video will be very good, and it doesn't even have to be real, because it can be choreographed and scripted, yet due to the skills of the participants look real.

As a customer I prefer the guy to be less skilled and beaten decisively despite trying his best. I want to see long tight schoolgirl pins, strong front and reverse headscissors, facesitting pins, all in a competitive setting. Unfortunately, these holds are rare when both competitors are very good at wrestling, since the guy then can often avoid getting into these positions. As a result a competitive match between highly-skilled opponents can be a little boring to me. But not necessarily. If I know the female wins through a hard fight and enjoys her win with a victory pose, I will buy the video, if I'm happy with other variables. Now that I think of it, I will also buy a video if I really like the lady, and her attitude, and I know she had her moments and good holds, even though she lost. It's not that easy, I am interested in lots of different stuff, and there are many variables. But I will prefer one-sided competitive match to an even competitive match any day.

Of course, skill should be the main criterion for an interesting match. When is the last time the vidbiz gave you a spectacular throw, even a takedown, or a bridge?
Having said that, it is quite true that the most interesting wrestlers are not always the most skilled. What can be said is that scripted videos are almost never interesting.

To YOU.
Scripted videos are more in demand than real wrestling matches precisely because they allow for wider variety of situations and scenarios. Just like feature movies are more popular than documentary films.

I would much prefer a match with a highly skilled female vs. a guy that had no clue. Jennifer Thomas vs. John for MWU is one of my favorites. I want the guy to be OWNED!

Also, I do prefer scripted. Having people go at it for 15 minutes with no words and then a silly victory pose is uninteresting. Like you haven't trash talked once and now there's a victory pose? That seems so staged.

I'd rather it all be staged but not SEEMED staged. But to each their own and I tried starting my own company but I just don't have the time. And I was told by multiple people I'd make no money.

I'm with you but fully competitive videos are hard to find. Which ones did you buy?

+1

My views are pretty much the same although I do like the ultra competitive matches with a punishment round at the end where the winner punishes the loser with more sexy humiliation holds at the end of the match. The matches produced by absolutemixedwrestling.com use this format and doommaidens have also used it for recent competitive matches between Veve Lane and Scorpion and also Ariala vs Sarah Brooke.

Well, those who enjoy long sgp's, scissors etc have it their way 90% of time in fully competitive videos. It's not that I don't like it, because if I didn't I wouldn't be in mixed wrestling in the first place. But seeing a highly skilled match after all those scissorfests is so refreshing !
And I, too, hate a scripted video. I never buy one unless I really really like the woman in it.

Well, there are some videos in which, even though the action itself may be good, the girl is so cold that it makes the video rather boring. Liz Veyron (fans' favourite) from gg is a very typical example of this. However not all unscripted videos are like that and too many of them are very lively, almost like a scripted match.

Not secessarily, but fully competitive with both opponents being not only strong but also skilled, yeah, those are rare to find.
gg333b from grapplinggirls and Nina vs Mattia - IFW73_1 from italianfemalewrestling.

Me too. I can never figure out the point. The "acting" is terrible and besides, everyone knows what's coming so just get to it already. The worst for this is Drew from Scissorvixens. For some reason, the guy seems to think he really can act. I turn off the sound the second I see him.
