Once they have been broken they are forever weaker. I had 4 ribs broken/whatever with a bear hug by a fellow worker...big Italian guys. Years later I wrestled a gal about 130...her body scissors was nothing to brag about but I could feel my ribs...pop,pop,pop,pop just like that!

I usually offer them an extra $100 if they break my ribs. So far, no luck. Maybe I'll up it to $200

(I'm kidding, ofcourse). The only time it happened to me, probably more of a cartilage tweek as it went away in a week or so, but at the time I thought it might be a hairline fracture, at least, that's what it felt like, not that, I would know, but that's what I thought it felt like.

That was kind of fun. A little annoying cause it hurt when I took a deep breath, but kind of a nice reminder of the two ladies one scissoring me, the other on my back, me unable to escape.

If only fractured or cracked, you can probably just tough it out. I've had a couple of cases of cracked ribs, from body-scissors. It's uncomfortable but not serious.
I broke 3 ribs a year or so back (from a ~6' fall not wrestling) and I agree with Brooksie that its a good idea to get an X-ray to check the damage. The bad news is that there is very little in the way of treatment, apart from painkillers and taking things easy (definitely no body scissors). I found codeine was the most effective, but it made me feel so spaced out that I only took them before I went to bed, and used ibuprofen during the day. For the first few weeks my chest muscles went into spasm on occasion which was really painful. Like earlier posters have said, it takes roughly 6 weeks for the ribs to heal. So just be patient!

Never had ribs, just a broken collarbone from football.
That's why I like sticking to a smothered face; after a face pounding session I have been congested, had black eyes and a sore face and neck, but nothing major broken (though my nose was bruised up a bit).

Hello everyone.

I would like to know how long it takes for broken ribs to heal completely. Any inputs from those who have experienced broken ribs are greatly appreciated.

Thanks.
Just one final point... I was told to make sure I took lots of deep breaths.. its counterintuitive and quite painfull and its tempting to try to manage with light breathing and avoid pain.

I was told but if you don't take regular deep breaths then the broken ribs may set wrong you can finish up with long term lung problems...

I've just got to add to this thread. I had three broken ribs from a +6 foot fall onto a collapsed metal ladder over 20 years ago. I was KO'd. I also suffered a punctured lung and a double break in my arm. It hurt a bit ( read, a fucking lot ). When my punctured lung healed, I was told to take as deep a breath as I could. This, was , I suppose important, as I used to scuba dive at the time. That must have been good advice as during a recent medical spirometry test, I was told that I had the lungs of a man about 15 years less than my age. Pretty good for an ex- VERY heavy smoker.

I have had broken ribs from a dirt bike accident. I flew off a jump at a wrong angle and I landed in front of a bush at about 40 mph. The motorcycle stopped immediately and I flew forward over the handle bars. I landed on my left side ribs. It was the worst pain I have ever felt. I remember it took about 6 to 8 weeks to heal. I could not laugh, cough, sneeze or breathe deeply without feeling pain. I also had to be very careful not to make sudden movements because I would also feel pain. Moving upper body left and right also hurt. If I stayed still and had a straight upperbody and took shallow breathes the pain was lessened. I was told that I should take deep breaths even though it was painful. I don't remember why but I guess that is supposed to help with healing process. I also put ice on injury first week or two to help with inflammation. Give it time and it should get better. Hope this helps.
