Stunt woman, Christine Child - a gifted judoka- took the place of Diana Rigg in many of the fight scenes.

Great discussion.

Please note that while Honor Blackman (Cathy Gale) may have been the best fighter, many of her episodes were not seen in the U.S. for many years. If I remember correctly, the ABC network didn’t pick-up the show until series 4 (the first season with Diana Rigg).

While Linda Thorson was – by far – the worst fighter among Steed’s three female partners, her role tended to be more of a love-struck novice agent - and not the experienced agent represented earlier. When the series was brought back in the mid 1970’s as the “New Avengers”, Joanna Lumley’s “Purdy” reverted more towards a hybrid of Cathy Gale and Emma Peel.

BTW, The series that ABC dropped so that they could broadcast the Avengers was a show called “Honey West” – which starred Anne Francis as Judo/Karate private detective.

I never was a fan of Tara. Honor Blackman's fight scenes were far too short. Diana Rigg had several long and sexy fight scenes, so she gets my vote.

I watched Emma Peel as a youngster, no more than 3 or 4. Got me hard as nails even then, early starter. Also loved an advert for BMK carpets which featured a gorgeous asian brunette (Edwina Carroll) doing judo on some men. Ah the 60s, there wasn't much but what there was was good.

Also have to bow down to her acting skills. Amazing performance in Game of Thrones.

Gotta go with Honor

Since each actress won every fight, I'm unsure how to compare their combat skills.

In terms of the one I want to watch, Diana Rigg is hard to beat.

Thanks Haveydog.
Do you have a screen cap of Edwina Carroll doing judo? I only know her from a small "space hostess" role in "2001".

Found it:

I watched every episode of The Avengers, starting with the first episode that included Honor Blackman. I enjoyed seeing her but the best fight scenes were acted by her replacement, Diana Rigg. #29 shows three parts of the very best fight scene from any episode of this series. The title of the episode is Death At Bargain Prices. It has a man pointing a gun at Emma Peel and it looks like she does not have a chance, but she disarms him in a way I find sexy and then she uses karate and judo to win their fight and knock him out.

Patrick Macnee played the part of Steed but he played it in two different ways. He was very realistic in his last episode with Honor Blackman but in his next episode with Diana Rigg and all of his later episodes with her, he was lighthearted and not serious. As good as he was, I watched this show for its female fight scenes.
