Here's a full-size video of the fight

and Frank Pozen's analysis:

Big Bad Blog Video Theater-Miesha Tate vs Holly Holm

Here's the match video of Holly Holm's first UFC Bantamweight Championship defense against Miesha Tate. I did not watch the fight live as I was at a jazz concert. So the promotion for this fight was "Is Holly Holm a one hit wonder?". I believe there was a lot of luck going her way to defeat Ronda Rousey. Luck plays a bigger role in MMA than some would like to admit. And she gave a perfect performance in that fight. She has to prove that she can do it again. After last night's fight, the answer is a resounding no. Holly was way too conservative in this fight. What happened to the risks she took against Ronda? Even if this fight had gone the distance, it might have ended up a draw. And this fight also brings up the judges reluctance to score tie rounds. Because if you watch this fight, rounds one, three and four could all be scored as tie rounds but all three judges scored them 10-9 for Holly. Neither fighter did much of anything in any of those rounds. It was all light sparring. After round two when Miesha took Holly down and got side control and then a rear naked choke at the end of the round, Holly was very reluctant to do anything. And that's how Miesha won this fight. She thought she was behind on the scorecards and needed to get a finish. Holly's lack of aggression played right into Miesha's hands and Miesha put Holly to sleep with a rear naked choke. Congratulations to Miesha Tate on winning the UFC Bantamweight Champion. UFC president Dana White says Ronda Rousey gets the first title shot this fall. Ronda didn't even see the fight. She was at a PWG wrestling show in Los Angeles. This loss certainly raises questions about Holly Holm being a fluke. She certainly needs to perform better than she did in this fight.

Rousey beat Tate..Holm beat Rousey..Tate beat Holm. There really is no consistent formula here on this one. All three girls are exceptional fighters. So Holly had an off night, she lost. I dunno, maybe Tate is the better fighter...but not by much judging from that boring fight. Not enough consistency to develop any opinions on who is better or who is a fluke...just my humble opinion. If anything, Rousey is most likely the better fighter (more impressive victories) who simply had a bad day when she got owned by Holm.

Wow, what a fight!

Congrats, Gemini! I hope you didn't bet on Conor in a dual bet

Loved watching Nate destroy the bubble. Conor says he lost because this is not "his division". But for the first time in his life he actually looked healthy during weigh-ins. I think 170 is his natural weight division. At 145 lb weigh-ins he looks like he is about to die. He is also I think the biggest 145 lb guy among the top guys of that division. The fact that he brought the division issue being the main problem several times already is pathetic.

In contrast, I loved the overall sportswomanship and post-fight comments from the two ladies.

Glad Conor and Ronda got their lesson in humility. Hope Ronda learns from it and comes back strong. Hope Conor doesn't destroy his body trying to cut weight for 145 lb again.

The potential payout isn’t as sweet – Tate, ranked No. 2 in the USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie MMA women’s bantamweight rankings, currently is a +250 underdog, meaning a $77,000 will net $192,500 in winnings. Holm, on the other hand, was at +900 for much of the buildup to the fight; Oancea claims he snagged a 12-1 line on the champ.

How could be Holly one hit wonder if she was beating Miesha until the last two minutes? In my opinion it's all about "syles make fights". As Sonnen almost beat Anderson Silva once time.

In a rematch Holm would have great chance of victory

This is one of the deficiencies of the judges scoring system. In rounds 1,3,4 holly was only slightly better, if at all, from Miesha. In round 2 Miesha totally dominated Holly. Because of the system, Holy "led" 38-37 after the first 4 rounds but in reality, if we look the first 4 rounds as a whole, Miesha had some great moments while Holys never had any real moment of advantage. This is a totally justified victory for Miesha, and a decision victory for Holm would have been unjustified.

Great point Royh -
I have been following Holly since her early boxing days so i am very disappointed that she lost. All she had to do was keep distance between herself and Tate for the final minutes but instead came in and attempted a strike in which Tate brilliantly took advantage of. At no time in this fight was Tate ever in trouble. In the second round Tate could have finished Holly off on the ground. After thinking about the fight from an MMA point of view, Tate was actually the better all around fighter here.
Funny how things pan out -
Keep Ronda from taking you down and you can beat her as Holly did.
Take Holly to the ground and you can beat her as Tate did.
Simple, right - lol

UNLESS... They're all Pokemon! Rousey is water, Holm is grass, and Tate is fire!

It just show that each match is different, and an element of luck is involved.
People make mistakes, sometimes an advantage can come out of that.
With contenders at this level, this is what happens.
