Post Wrestling video reviews

I've been gathering together some videos that I thought deserved a review and I noticed there's not a lot of this kind of thing on the site. So I'm going to post a few and see what the reaction is. I should state my biases, so you know what kind of vid I will or won't review.

DISCLAIMER
My main interest these days is in competitive, or fairly competitive wrestling. I'm looking for hard scrambling action, lots of sweat and strain, grunting and groaning...all the stuff that shows two women grappling strenuously with each other. I said "women" because a match of that kind is likely going to be a women's match. It's much harder to find that sort of thing in a mixed match. Not saying there aren't any, just that they're rare. I'll be reviewing some but please, if you know of any truly competitive mixed matches, let me know.

Mixed matches that aren't really competitive. This can include videos featuring a women who is just so far beyond the man in either strength, skill or both or the typical squash match featuring a lay-down-on-the-job jobber. Those kind of matches can be fun, depending on the participants and I'll review some of those as well.

What I won't review:

- fantasy matches, anything that is campy, silly, involves costumes and role-playing, fake action, pro wrestling histrionics and so on. I have nothing against that stuff. If there's people out there who like it, and there's a market for producing it, who am I to criticize? In fact, I've got no problems with any of it. People like what they like and that's cool with me, up to the point of child exploitation, snuff vids and similar atrocities. But I don't like or watch that stuff and certainly have no business reviewing it.

- ballbusting or beatdowns. That's something else I don't care for. To me, it's just gratuitous violence. I don't want to watch it.

- scissor videos. Two reasons, one I don't know what there would be to review. It's really just the same video over and over. He puts his head where she tells him and it's on. 30-40 minutes of every kind of scissor hold known to man, unless it's one of those where it's just one hold for the duration. I simply wouldn't know what to say. Unfortunately, that's rarely true of the victims in such vids. The exception would be the knockout vids. One or two of those might be worth a review.

The second reason is, I'm just getting burned out on scissors holds. They are so relentlessly ubiquitous that I sometimes feel like I'm drowning in a sea of scissors. I'll take them as they come in comp or semi-comp but a whole vid of nothing but scissors? Pass.

- wrestling porn. Again, what's to say? It is what it is. I wouldn't know how to review it.

LES FEMMES FATALES, Bettie vs Ariel

To start with, I chose a fully competitive video produced by Les Femmes Fatales, featuring Ariel X and Bettie, or Bad Bettie as she's sometimes known. Here it was just Bettie, so I'll go with that. So it's fairly well-known that "Bettie" is the alias of a UFC fighter. The fact she's chosen to wrestle under another name says, to me, she'd like to keep wrestling and MMA separate. I believe that should be acknowledged and that there's no value to anyone in mentioning her name. And yes, I realize it's not exactly the world's most closely guarded secret. Still, I'm doing this because I respect and admire these women and will govern myself accordingly. You all do as you see fit.

The video opens with interviews, as they so often do. Most of the time these are pretty bad so it was a blessing to find one that wasn't so awful. Of course there was the usual weight and height question which, and I'm just going to say this one time, SERVES NO USEFUL PURPOSE! Seriously, people reciting statistics is never interesting and there's absolutely no reason not to just put the numbers on the screen. Surely to goddess there's something more interesting to talk about. I know it goes by quickly, after all, how much time does it take to say two numbers, but there's the question itself, the equivocating (well, I think I'm just about *** today, I'm not really sure. I haven't weighed myself in...zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz). It seems like they're always done but never necessary.

Anyway, pardon my rant. Pet peeve, I guess. The good thing about the interview is that it actually contained interesting information. Bettie admitted she didn't know much about her opponent, just that Ariel was said to be the best of the girls she was there to wrestle, so she was glad to be starting with her. I'm sure she knows about Ariel's porn career but she didn't mention it. Still, I couldn't help but wonder if she might be underestimating Ariel, who is a strong, athletic woman, a skilled fighter (BJJ blue or purple belt) and has a ton of wrestling experience. It was amazing - searching out competitive stuff, Ariel is all over the internet (VeVe too). There was a shorter interview with Ariel as well in which she reveals that, unlike her opponent she did some research on Bettie. These were done separately, with the post-match interview featuring them on camera together.

The match began with them on their feet. I don't recall what Ariel's judo skills are like but fighting from the feet may have disadvantaged her. Bettie did a nice hip toss and quickly had Ariel down on the mat. But she took her time in securing the headlock and Ariel was able to pop free. This is where Bettie may have been surprised, as Ariel's transition was so fast and beautiful to watch. She immediately took Bettie's back and worked to lock in a choke. Bettie turtled up tight and Ariel was having a hard time flattening her out. Finally she pulled a kind of "Hail Mary" move by just latching on tight to Bettie's neck and letting her weight fall over to one side. If it hadn't worked, it would have easy for Bettie to shake her off and scramble out but it did, and Bettie submitted. First round took just under one minute.

Bettie started out round two with another fast takedown and a nice move to pass Ariel's guard and move to side control. I'm going to summarize the rest of the fight a bit more than I might ordinarily, due to the length of the intro and disclaimer. What followed was another 29 minutes of hard grappling, showing a lot of defensive skill by both women, but Ariel in particular. She simply frustrated Bettie at every turn. She escaped a couple of armbar attempts, recalling the opening interview where she said she trained specially for that, and generated some offense of her own with a couple of guillotine chokes that she couldn't quite secure. She was looking for a triangle choke at one point. She had the arm but couldn't get her legs anywhere near close enough to pull it off. It was a great example of how good Bettie's defence and positioning was. The match ended in a victory for Ariel, 1- 0.

These women are in amazing shape. Neither one was breathing particularly hard at the end, not do to lack of effort but just because these are the kind of women who can do a half-hour of hard wrestling and be ready for more. The closing interview showed that, if Bettie didn't know who Ariel was before the fight, she sure did now. Obvious respect from both women towards each other and Bettie seemed like she enjoyed it. Robin asked if she'd be up for more matches and she agreed. This video is from 2011 and I'm not sure if she's done anything since then. That was about the time her pro career really got going, so maybe she didn't feel comfortable doing both. I also believe she dipped her toe into the sessions pool but imagine she soon realized there was no way to keep that kind of thing a secret, even with an alias.

That brings me to my final point, which has to do with what I just said about Bettie. Near the end of their conversation Robin asked Ariel if she had anything to say to the guys watching this video and something struck me. There was nothing in that match for anyone to be embarrassed about. It wasn't phony, fluff wrestling, it wasn't femdom or anything remotely pornographic and, if a guy wanted to interest a girl in wrestling, it would be a good video to use for that purpose. So it would be nice, IMHO, if producers would start realizing that it might not always be a guy watching. We should all remain as open as possible to the idea that more women may start seeing this stuff, liking it, training to do it. I mean they all want to stay fit, we just need to convert more runners to wrestlers. The universe operates on strange and unknown principles. Let the power of the mind be unleashed

Excellent description of the match, Brooksie. We had to pull down all of the "Bettie" matches at her request due to her pro career, so they no longer appear in the LesFemmesFatales catalogue.

In response to your comment regarding women being involved, Robin asked Ariel that question because we had sponsors for those matches. Contrary to popular belief, this industry is not quite the gold mine that many believe it is.

I'm not sure how well known this is, but women have also been known to pay other women to session wrestle too. Sometimes the matches are filmed as competitive matches, sometimes they are filmed as fetish videos. It's all driven by the almighty buck since this is not simply a "hobby" for everyone involved. We've shot some videos that were fabulous, such as Veve Lane doing competitive matches that I would have titled as "Submission Clinics" (better bring your best game against Veve!), and we've shot videos that I figured that the only copy that would ever go out was the one that went to the customer that scripted it. Regardless, they go up for sale because one person's Rose is another person's Thorn.

Thanks again for the review as I'm sure that people looking for a REAL competitive match will appreciate it. They can contact me if they are looking for it also.

I love the idea of a thread dedicated to reviewing videos. I actually wouldn't mind seeing a sub-forum created here specifically for reviewing videos.

Thank you for filling in some of the details. Always great to hear from an insider. Feel free to make recommendations for other videos for me to review.

Nah, then you just get every yahoo with an opinion chiming in. Reviewing anything properly is a skill and not everyone can do it. Create a sub-form and you'll wind up with edifying "reviews" such as:
"this was really good, l liked the victory pose at the end where she sticks her toes up his nose. I could totally wank off to it."

What would be good is if someone wanted to pick up the slack and review the stuff I won't. As for this thread, I wouldn't mind contributions from others as long as they take it seriously, watch the vid and pay attention to the details and write as if they are actually trying to inform others. I view it as being in service to the forum. If I'm going to offer reviews then I feel an obligation to make them worth reading by doing my best to describe the video in a way that might help someone decide whether or not to purchase it.

Well, no sooner do I write this:

"My main interest these days is in competitive, or fairly competitive wrestling. I'll be reviewing some but please, if you know of any truly competitive mixed matches, let me know."

than I stumble across what may be the holy grail - a competitive match between Raquel and a German (I think) guy named Gerd. I've seen this guy in a few other vids but don't know anything about him.

I can't link to the match directly but it was found on the Hungarian Female Wrestlers Facebook page:

[Only Registered Users Can See LinksClick Here To Register]

There is a treasure trove on interesting stuff on that page, don't know how I missed it until now. Further proof that the internet is, indeed, a big place. Anyway, I think I'll be going back to this page a few times. I found several things there that would merit a review.

DWW, Raquel vs Gerd

This is a very early DWW production. The video opened with a very simple, almost crude-looking graphic that simply said "DWW", nothing at all like their later productions. The setting was outdoors, with a very large mat surface and a small audience of roughly 20 people, as best as I could tell. Raquel's weight is 128lbs. Gerd's is not given but I'd estimate around 180.

Ok, let's take the bull by the horns. I said "competitive" and I know my first question would be "what do you mean by that? Fully competitive or..."
I can't say for certain that Gerd was going all out. There's no way to know that for sure. However, there are clues, signs...tells, as they say in poker.

For one thing, Gerd had actual offensive moves. How many videos have you seen where, even if the guy is really trying to break out of the holds, even if he's not putting himself in a situation that makes it easy for her to apply them, he is not doing anything offensive, not trying to get her into holds. That may have been what was agreed on. Regardless, you soon realize you're looking at something that is not actually competitive.

This is not the case here. Gerd goes for headlocks, takedowns, trips and genuinely seems to be taking the match seriously. Is it "his best"? Can't say, you'll have to judge for yourself. But he is definitely trying and you can tell that from his grunts, his heavy breathing, his reaction to things that hurt, like the knee to the head he took at one point. Raquel choked him out for one submission and you see his frantic tapping accompanied by a high-pitched wail. This is not "acting" for the camera.

The match begins with Raquel playing it safe, staying out of Gerd's reach and making him come to her. The tactic frustrates Gerd and he admonishes her to "come to the middle" or "don't run away" several times during the course of the match. They finally engage and Raquel clinches, her hands locked behind his neck. She wants to bring his head down but he is not making it easy for her. She tries a couple of times, realizes what's wrong, changes her angle by moving her legs back and, with a violent jerk, brings him to his knees. She tries to push him onto his back but Gerd resists so she executes one of many lighting-quick transitions and moves behind him. He tries to twist away but Raquel turns him onto his back as she takes him to the mat. He pushes her off and they wind up facing each other on their knees.

Raquel immediately tries a flying headscissor but Gerd defends by standing up and dumping her to the mat. The instant her feet hit the floor, Raquel spins and takes his back again. This time Gerd knows what's coming and tries to fight her off. It takes a bit more work this time but Raquel eventually gets him down again. Another flying headscissor attempt that fails, more scrambling with Gerd trying to get to his feet or at least his knees but Raquel is on him like a backpack. He just can't shake her off. When they finally do roll apart, Raquel gets to her feet, hands on her knees, patiently waiting for Gerd who is breathing pretty heavily at this point and the match is only two minutes old.

The next sequence is really cool. Gerd tries for a double leg takedown but Raquel steps neatly out of the way. Gerd winds up flat on the mat and Raquel is on him before he can get up, taking his back. Gerd is on his knees trying desperately to get to his feet but Raquel is frustrating him, maintaining constant contact, staying on him at every turn. Finally Gerd gets a bit of leverage, lifts her slightly and dumps Raquel on her back. She gets her legs around him in full guard but doesn't seem happy with her position so she pushes off his shoulders, slides back and turns to get to her feet.

I don't know if Gerd surprised her but he sure did me as he quickly lunged and grabbed her while she was still on her knees. Raquel fights hard and he can't get control of her. She gets back on her knees, turtling up with Gerd on top of her. He gets exactly zero time to think about what to do next as Raquel shows her power by pushing up with her hips and tossing him right over her head. Now her speed is on display as she gets a headlock, tries to maneuver him into a scissor hold, loses it, tries again and gets it, rolls him over and puts on the pressure. Gerd taps in about two seconds, first submission to Raquel. He gets to his knees, grabbing at his neck, his face flushed, leaving not much doubt this was a real submission.

The match is just under four minutes at this point and the action doesn't flag at all. There is just simply too much of it to even think about describing the entire match. Best to say it continues very much along the same vein as the opening four minutes and ends in a 4-0 victory for Raquel. Along the way we get an amazing display of Raquel at her unleashed best. Lots of space, no outclassed opponent who she has to dial-it-back for, nothing to impede her showing off the legendary skill that so many people have referenced over the years. Watching Raquel move is truly a thing of beauty. I always figured if she'd been in the Lingerie Football League, she'd have torn it up. Gerd tries to take her down, executing a nice ankle grab as she tries to slip past him, running her down and even catching her in a couple of bodyscissors but he can't match Raquel's conditioning. He keeps losing energy as the match goes along, breathing becoming more and more laboured while Raquel acts like it's a day at the beach, not winded at all.

At about the 11:00 minute mark, Raquel has him in a crossbody pin, and does something with his chin. I can't tell if it was a choke or some kind of neck crank but whatever it did made him cry out in pain and frantically tap out. The next submission comes about two minutes later. They are again facing each other on their knees. Gerd is moving noticeably slower now and Raquel takes advantage with another flying headscissor and this time she gets it. Gerd fights it hard but no dice, Raquel makes him give up to her once more.

The final submission shows another side of Raquel, her professionalism and good sportsmanship. She has Gerd flat on his back, one arm trapped between her legs while applying a killer headlock. At one point Gerd snorts and Raquel immediately lets up, asking him if he's ok. In fact she asks him twice and it's clear she's concerned he may have gone briefly unconscious. He assures her he's ok and she gets right back to work, extracting the submission shortly thereafter. By the time the match is drawing to a close, after 16:00 minutes, the difference in conditioning really shows. Raquel is the stronger of the two now, muscling the bigger man around the mat with ease. She was on the verge of a fifth submission when time ran out.

To say I enjoyed this match is an understatement. Like so many other in this scene, I'm a huge fan of Raquel and am always hoping to find more examples like this, where she can really open up and show her full wrestling ability. Raquel, as anyone who's seen her knows, has a superb physique, appears to love what she does and often shows it with that huge, wonderful smile that lights up her whole face. Plus, she always appears to be cool, calm, collected and just an all-round cool chick. If you like Raquel, do not miss this one.
