Current Hollywood Films and Female Beauty
I'm not saying that gorgeous women don't still appear in Hollywood films, but there certainly seems to be a counter-movement to focus on female leads who are not "traditionally beautiful."
I happened to see both DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS and RENFIELD this weekend. Now, of the two female leads in the ensemble, one, Sophia Lillas is a very slender, average looking female, but that kind of fits what they wanted from her character, so No Big. But I thought there was a definite attempt to avoid giving Michelle Rodriguez any feminine allure, and even at 40-something she's still got the essential stuff, they just didn't want her to look hot for straight guys. Not saying no one would find her alluring as she is, but I thought there was a definite attempt to make her unappealing with some idea of "realism" at work (though Chris Pine's good looks remain unmarred in the same film). RENFIELD was worse because the female lead, played by Awkafina (sp), is rather dumpy in contrast to Nicholas Hoult, her male co-star. She gets a handful of fight-scenes but there's no visual pleasure to them given that she's so average looking. (And she spends much of the film in a cop's uniform.) Plus, I didn't think there was anything special about her acting. In one scene, she wakes with a shoulder wound that she passed out from. For the whole scene, not a HINT that her wound caused her any pain or even inconvenience. These examples remind me of the infamous GHOSTBUSTERS 2021. When all the female leads went out to hype the film, they cleaned up real good and showed off their glamour potential. but in the film proper, they all dress badly and look rather skungy. But they had a traditionally good looking "himbo" around for their delectation. Let's hear what you think? Threat-- or menace? Last edited by Dennis Dune; 17-Apr-23 at 13:36. |

Re: Current Hollywood Films and Female Beauty
A woman's beauty is the only thing that brings her to the table in Hollywood and mostly in life in general.
Take that away and they have nothing, as evidenced by the Ghostbusters flop you mentioned. |

As for the original "point," the issue is that Hollywood at this point is only interested in movies that have potential to be international hits that make a billion dollars. It's made genres that are successful nationally but not globally like comedy and especially rom coms basically disappear and the only things that get made are things with existing IPs like superhero movies and remakes. That was the issue with the Ghostbusters remake, nobody was really that interested in a new Ghostbusters property. Ghostbusters afterlife made even less money than Ghostbusters answer the call, but it had a smaller budget and didn't have the "they ruined my childhood by replacing the men with women" thing so it didn't get as skewered. |

Re: Current Hollywood Films and Female Beauty
An actress who is good at portraying a character will be cast whether or not she physically resembles the director's or producer's idea of what the character should look like. A great example of this is Charlize Theron, who was made up to look quite plain in Monster, and to look very dirty and intimidating in Fury Road.

It seems like nowadays movie directors are more willing to cast based on acting talent. I don't see why this is a bad thing. Michelle Rodriguez is not a super talented actress but she plays the part of tough quiet person pretty well, so her casting as that part in Dungeons and Dragons seems like a good fit. Overall the movie was pretty good and she fit in well with the other cast members. Renfield was marketed as a comedy and somehow Awkafina has successfully marketed herself as a comedic actress. I don't think she is funny but it makes sense that they would cast her for a comedy movie. Also if you are looking for media that casts attractive women then look at things made for TV. Euphoria, the Witcher, Game of Thrones, Westworld, The White Lotus, Lucifer, The Morning Show, The Boys, etc |

Re: Current Hollywood Films and Female Beauty
Here's an interesting take on the forbidden depiction of traditionally hot female characters in videogames, where obviously "personal talent" is not an element in "casting."
