Pretty sure I know which you mean. I've spent virtually nothing (take a guess and you're probably overestimating) on car repairs past couple years. That's not true at all. You're not even close. For decades, Brazil has been ~5% for English competency.

and knowing phrases in English
can help street vendors to get an edge,
plus, nowdays everyone has android,
and apps are free.

There is nothing more important than time.

Portuguese isn't hard. If you know any Spanish you're already most of the way there.

It's always cute when people don't take their own advice. Your "quite a few Brazilians" is a much smaller sample size than you think. I'm in frequent communication with Brazilians and my experience is quite different. Yes, they typically know more English than I know Portuguese - a pretty low bar - but the vast majority are only roughly communicative in English. I have been to Portugal and did not encounter much English outside the cities (hotels, of course). That's my experience, maybe you had otherwise.

The prior poster's reference to street vendors is puzzling. Do you people really think street vendor knowledge/behaviors are representative of the much broader population? Because that's crazy if you do. But wer only ever sees the world through a western European lens, so there's that.

If this has to do with sessions, it only takes intermediate language skills to do sessions or talk gym stuff in that language. Especially when they often borrow English terms anyway. Being able to have actual conversations about life, politics, economics, technology, etc. or to read a book is a much higher bar. There are some European session wrestlers who don't have great English, but can still do the basics of sessions. But they may not do well with complicated role-plays. By the same token, if you can get your skills to an intermediate level, you can do the same in their country. Of course the majority of Americans put in zero effort when it comes to foreign languages.
