It reveals nothing about the culture, the organisation, the detection methods of the country.

And even if it is the case:
The USA have a huge population and good infrastructures. They are the second biggest federation in number of member in soccer. They are the 28th nation according to the FIFA rankings.

However the small belgium is ranked 5th by the FIFA.

Does it mean that belgian men are more naturally athletic than american men?

The eastern europe countries have an old culture of track and fields with great knowledge and organisation.
Moreover you take the records which are some extrem data points, some of them established as the sovietic block countries were widely relying on intense doping, especially for women who received high doses of testosterone.

Check the javeline or weight throwing records for women. Czech republic, russia, east germany and ukrain made all of them before 1989.

It is well documented that these nations used testosterone. Your method ignores these facts...
There are big stadiums in those countries which suggests that people are interested in sports and there is a big demand. And where there is a demand for sports there will always be young men pursuing athletic careers and picking up sports. If you travel to some country and you see farms there the logic suggests that there are farmers living there and if you see big stadiums the logic suggests that there are a lot of athletes there.

When it comes to culture you could argue that Europe in fact doesn't have a sports culture either. Most people are not interested in competing in sports and many people live sedentary livestyles and there is a lot of hedonism. Very few girls are interested in pursuing athletic careers even if they are athletically gifted because they have other options and can have a more comfortable lifestyle doing something else that doesn't require them to sacrifice their entire youth. Even the girls who excelled at the younger level often drop everything to focus on studying. Those Czech girls come from a very small talent pool of girls who are actually interested in becoming elite competitors from a population pool that is already 3 times smaller than that of Yemen. It's not like Europe has some Sparta-like system where they would be forcing everybody to train a sport and be athletic, it's rather the complete opposite.

Most of the female records from Russia and Czechia are modern and not from the communist times. The women who set those records mostly look very feminine and girly. They might be some doping going on but everybody is using it in sports. I don't really see this as an "excuse".

Soccer is a different thing because it's a very technical sport which requires a lot of tactics and experience as well. A lot of very athletic soccer players fail badly and a lot of athletically less gifted soccer players become huge stars. It doesn't necessarily demonstrate top athleticism.

Sprinting, running and jumping is the best measure of raw athleticism you can get. That's why they use sprinting and jumping in the NFL combine because it's the easiest way to see how athletically gifted a person is. You can't beat a sprinter by having better "skills" if you have significantly inferior athletic predispositions no matter how hard and how good you train.

You can interprete these results in any way you want, but the fact is that these are women beating men in sports they both train for and try to be at their absolute best despite the popular narrative being that something like this shouldn't happen! So it's fair to suggest that those women are simply more athletic than the male populations of those countries. If people who want to mock female sports constantly bring up women soccer teams losing to 13 year olds then it's also fair to bring up some statistics where women athletes do surprisingly well and actually best the men who by the logic of their detractors they should have no business beating at all! Most people who don't know about the facts I posted would probably bet on the Nepalese/Yemeni men if such contest was to take place.

Another thing that makes men vs women contests exciting is the inevitable humiliation of men if they happen to come up short.

Also, we're dealing with Yemen here that treats women horribly and has actually managed to be the ranked the lowest out of all countries when it comes to women rights. It's obvious that their society considers women to be completely inferior to men. There should be absolutely no excuses for them, I mean if they go around spreading ideas that women are inferior they should be able to beat them, right? If these athletic contests happened side by side the Yemeni men would be shamed mercilessly by the entire world for losing to some girly Czech women considering what kind of ideas their society has. Let's face it, there is no way they would save face. It would probably have a deep psychological effect on their entire society.

There might be more sympathy for the Nepalese men though as they would likely come to terms with the female superiority of Russian women better but it would definitely be a very humbling experience for them as well.

Ultimately this is just a fun thread so feel free to disagree.

Just because you have two big stadiums in the country, this means there is a sports culture in the country with a very organized network of track and fields clubs?

Do you realize how unscientific is this statement??

It seems you also have no idea how technical is a high level training for the 100 m...

It means that the country is into sports. It means that it means a great deal to them and that they take pride in sporting achievements. And they have more than two big stadiums. They have a popular football league with stadiums all over the country. What more do you need for sprinting than a simple running track?

Sprinting and jumping is mostly about raw athletic gifts. Some people have them, some people don't. That's why Czech women also beat women from much richer and bigger countries with better sports infrastructure. These ex-communist countries don't have that great infrastructure anymore since the communism failed but their athletes are still keeping up. Also what about all those great African runners from poor countries?

Look at the conditions Kenyan athletes have:
[Only Registered Users Can See LinksClick Here To Register]
[Only Registered Users Can See LinksClick Here To Register]

Didn't stop them from winning 30 gold medals, 37 silver medals and 27 bronze medals for a total of 93 Olympic medals!

In fact the reason why some of these poor African and Carribbean countries are so good at track and field is precisely because this is a sport where elite athletic genetics can overcome things like better infrastructure that some richer countries might have. That's why this is the one sport where you can see a lot of athletes from poor countries competing at the highest level.

Also, Yemeni athletes are getting financial help from richer Arab countries. I read articles about Qatar helping Yemeni track and field athletes (like [Only Registered Users Can See LinksClick Here To Register] one), paying for them, giving them accommodation in Qatar and offering them their training facilities. Those Arab countries help each other and sports mean a great deal to them and they're investing tons of money into all kinds of sports. They would give anything to have great athletes but money can't buy high end athletic genetics.

No one gets to the high level training immediately, you need to show some athleticism so that you're worth the investment. A Yemeni guy displaying even an ounce of raw natural athleticism would likely immediately get help from rich sugar daddies.

A lot of Arab refugees in Europe are also being given a push and are put into all kinds of athletic programs in countries like Germany for free. The liberal politics in Europe are desperate for producing refugee success stories to justify their policies and are giving their athletes all the possibilites in their top level facilities. Those athletes then still represent their original countries. And guess what? They still get whooped by European women. I'm going to compare some of those stats later on too.

So if you take all of this into account there's a big chance that a talented Yemeni athlete would actually get better training than a Czech woman, he would just need to get his talent noticed by those stiking rich Arab benefactors. Czech women don't have that privilege and can only rely on the help they get from their own small ex-communist country.

Over all a very interesting topic. I think a very important variable that has not been mentioned is the level of coaching. The level of coaching as well as sport specific support would be far superior for the Russian and Czech women.

Training facilities, coaching, nutrition, and sports medicine would be in the Russians favor.

Read my previous post on this:

I'd like to point this part out once again specifically:

So following that logic guys from rich countries like say Sweden should be able to easily outrun them, but they can't.

Athletics is mostly about raw athleticism.

Russian and Czech women are just incredibly athletically gifted.

Default Re: Female athletes vs male athletes from different countries

Garcon55, I think the entire point of this thread was to see if the storyline of that old Bond movie made any sense, meaning could big athletic women from the developed world dominate men in the developing world. At least that's what's stated in the OP. So it doesn't really matter how poor or unorganized Yemen, Nepal etc. are.

Default Re: Russian women vs Nepalese men athletic comparison

Probably the most interesting one so far. When it comes to "poor training conditions" keep in mind that a lot of Afghan athletes live and train abroad while still representing Afghanistan. Also Slovenia is one of the smallest countries in the world, it's 17 million Afghan men out there to beat the records of the best female athletes out of 1 million Slovenian women. Can they do it?

Afghanistan vs Slovenian women
♂ vs

I took Afghanistan in this comparison since it's a huge country that values sports highly. Also, due to the war a lot of their refugees were put in athletic programs in rich Western countries to which they emigrated and took up sports there while still representing Afghanistan (so their records count as Afghan records). The MMA fighter [Only Registered Users Can See LinksClick Here To Register] is one of such example, and many of their track and field records were broken by Afghan athletes who are training and competing in Western countries like Germany or Scandinavian countries. I'm pointing this out so there shouldn't be any excuses about them not having the right training conditions.

Wikipedia has a long article about sports in Afghanistan and you can see that they are very much into sports. A lot of infrastructure was rebuilt too and they have a some perfectly modern sports facilities.

[Only Registered Users Can See LinksClick Here To Register]

If anything, the Western countries being desperate for refugee success stories are willing to give them everything they need and are pushing the athletes coming from countries like Afghanistan. They're getting the hype from the media as well with the "Afghan refugee tries to overcome all odds and win gold" type of generic stories like [Only Registered Users Can See LinksClick Here To Register].

Now you might say that not all Afghan people are lucky enough to get that treatment but that's why I'm going to compare them to women from a much much smaller nation. 33 million people live in Afghanistan vs the women of Slovenia, a country with only 2 million inhabitants! And you also have to add few more millions of Afghans the [Only Registered Users Can See LinksClick Here To Register], the Afghans who left the country and are living abroad but would still rep their country.

The sex ratio in Afghanistan is 1.05 male(s)/female, so there has to be like 17 million of Afghan men versus 1 million of Slovenian women.

This comparison is more than fair. You have a fair share of Afghani athletes training in the top notch Western facilities which are actually even much better than the ones in Slovenia. And there's 17 times more Afghan men than there are Slovenian women!

In fact, on paper this actually seems like a total mismatch in favor of the Afghan men. Surely out of 17 million of the males there should find enough athletes to best the best female results out of an only 1 million strong group of women? I think many people would laugh at the idea that the women from such a small nation can achieve better results than the male population of a much much larger nation...

But that's only because those people probably aren't aware of the extraordinary athleticism of Slovenian women! For a country of only 2 million their country seems to be overachieving in sports big time. Slovenia has only been independent since 1991 and has only participated in 7 summer and 7 winter Olympic games but has already won a total of 38 Olympic medals, 7 of them being gold medals (4 of those won by women) and that's despite being one of the smallest countries in the world.

Slovenian women come from a country with less inhabitants than Brooklyn yet they have very solid records in all of the athletics events and somehow manage to be competitive everywhere. They're also elite in winter sports like skiing (2 gold medals there in 2014), won 2 gold medals in combat sports (Judo) in the last two Olympics while also boasting a silver medal in swimming from 2008. It looks like every girl that picks up a sport there turns out to be a decent female athlete.

The average height for Slovenian women is 167cm or 5'6'' which puts them among the tallest women in the world on average.

So obviously we're dealing with a concentration of elite high-end athletic genetics here and very athletically gifted women.

Another thing that you have to consider is that by European standards Slovenia isn't a rich country. It's a former communist country that used to be part of communist Yugoslavia. Unlike other communist countries like Soviet Union or Eastern Germany, Yugoslavia wasn't putting much emphasis on individual sports and track and field wasn't a particular priority, the country excelled more in male team sports and those sport teams were the pride of the country (that's why there have been many good NBA players from ex-Yugoslavia and those countries are also very good at soccer). The reason for this was to promote unity and cohesion in an ethnically mixed country. They never built any elite track and field infrastructure and there doesn't seem to be any such infrastructure in Slovenia right now by any means. The country doesn't even have a single big stadium for track and field events! [Only Registered Users Can See LinksClick Here To Register] is their biggest stadium for athletics events. The infrastructure is inferior compared to the rest of Europe! Also, all of these women records are recent, not a single one of them is from the communist times, so these achievements have nothing to do with any kind of elaborate communist doping program. They can't be attributed to anything else but to incredible athleticism of Slovenian women.

This isn't a huge country like Russia, if women from a nation of 2 million people can set better records in athletics than men from a nation of 33 million people in various different disciplines of athletics that can only be due to superior athleticism.

Regardless of the variables of relative cultural and economic advantages/disadvantages, the simple fact that these trained women are outperforming trained men in their respective athletic disciplines is awesome. Go ladies!
