In krav maga you are not bound by rules, wich means you can learn and use very aggressive techniques.

If you can learn to train for a wrestling fight, why not train for a real fight?

The difference is that you are willing to seriously injure someone.

What kind of martial arts are you talking about?
Judo, Capoeira, Tai chi Chuan, Muay Thai are all considered martial arts yet give way different skills.

Again... how do you spar without rules?
Can you practice eye pokes and biting at full force?

Do you think a Olympic wrestler or Judo player can't seriously injure someone?
How about on concrete?

What do you think the original purpose of martial arts was?

What about the 20 year age gap though?

Statham represented his country at the 1990 commonwealth games in diving.

That was 31 years ago.

I don't know many 54 year olds that would claim to be in anywhere near the shape they were in when they were 24, 34, etc.

When you get to that age, a lot of people are carrying around ailments and health issues - bad back, painful shoulder, inky brinky knees.

"I used to be able to..." Is a very common phrase. Athleticism is not static as we age.

Like I said, I'd still give Statham the benefit of the doubt. He appears to be in great shape and could pass for being 10-15 years younger visually. If he were 34 it would pretty much be a no-brainer but at 54 there are more variables depending on his true health and level of mobility.

Your physical shape has less to do with your age and more with how many injuries you stacked up.
Tons of people in their 20 or 30s are a mess because of injuries and spent hours rehabbing while being limited in their physical activities.

Your stamina, health and quality of your joints etc does not suddenly fall off a cliff once you get past a certain number.
It seems more a result of injuries, diseases or other issues you suffer from.

For example a ton of football players have terrifying brain issues.
Which is not a result of their age but because of their carreer.
People doing heavy drinking or drug abuse also look like undead mummies after a certain amount of years living like that.

Statham looks in good shape and considering he did not get tackled by giants for years in a row or punched in the head for a life or falling of bicycles during the Tour de France he probably does not have much health issues.

Yawn.

Statham stomps Rosie. It's a no brainer. Next.

It really isn't all about injuries.

Look at it like this, if Statham at 54 were to fight his 24-34 year old cloned self, the 24-34 year old version would almost certainly win. The human body is in its "prime" from around 20-35... Sure it's different for everyone and there are variations, but by your mid/late 30s, you will begin a slow and gradual decline as you head up towards middle age.

When you get into your mid 40s, it doesn't matter if you've never been injured in your life, you're past your prime. Fact. You don't have the energy (hormones, metabolism changes), or the physical mobility you had in your 20s & 30s.

You can look up about Osteology and the ageing effects. You lose bone mass and density with age. This makes bones weaker and more brittle. It's accelerated for a completely sedentary person as weight training helps to maintain bone density but again, time is not your friend compared to a much younger person.

It's no secret that we stiffen up as we get older. Lose mobility, lose flexibility. This is because fluid in the joints decreases and accelerates the "wear and tear" of cartilage loss, calcification and thats when things like arthritis sets in. More inflammation and pain.

Statham obviously isn't a broken down old man yet but there is a big difference between 54 and 34. It seems a lot of middle aged guys don't want to admit youth is a huge advantage and a lot of middle aged guys would lose to Rosie (maybe not Jason, but Joe Average Couch Potato for sure) primarily based on her youth advantage.

Not disagreeing with your overall points – but this isn't necessarily a fact.

People don't age with time, but with damage, and the effects of that damage .. e.g. age-related Testosterone decline may be a myth – the Healthy Man study found that when you adjusted for obesity and chronic illness, there's no loss in T, even in men as old as 80s.

Take Chuando Tan (55) or Mike O'Hearn (51) or Tom Cruise doing all of his own stunts at 58 .. These people are all arguably more youthful and capable of being in better shape than most 20-somethings (esp. nowadays with serious falls in T levels in the young).

One study on telomere attrition found that a very small number of people don't appear to age at all, at the cellular level, between 20 and 40 – and by 40, you can easily be 20 years out, either way.

Likewise in females – Deidre Pagnanelli, at 51, has a body very few 20-something females could achieve with any level of gym commitment .. There's a limit (literally, the Hayflick limit), but biological age can basically be a long way off chronological age, and most effects of ageing are really lifestyle effects.

With those guys, I'm inclined to think a lot of it is smoke and mirrors. I'm not so sure about O'Hearn, I think he's one of those guys that might up and keel over any day from a heart attack. Someone like Tom Platz however, is in amazing shape and amazingly fit/strong for his age, for any age.

No doubt little Tom Cruise is still doing very well for himself. But how much of it is smoke and mirrors, clever editing. How would he do against the 28 -38 year old version of himself in a fight?

For me, it's more about how a person is moving than how youthful hey look. Ralph Macchio, star of Karate Kid and Cobra Kai on Netflix is 60 years old but could still pass for early/mid 40s.

[Only Registered Users Can See LinksClick Here To Register]

Some of it is smoke and mirrors - a hair piece, face lift, botox, etc. But thing is, he is moving horribly. His "fight scenes" are slow, weak and very sorry looking. It's then that you have to remember this is a 60 year old man.

Some people can do a good job maintaining and "holding on" to a commendable level of fitness but I still contend they are well past their prime.

Ultimately it's why you don't see 50-60 year olds running around on the pitch, playing in the premiership and most other physically taxing sports, the olympics etc.

It's also important to note that being sedentary is also more "damaging" than being active and risking injury.

Again, it's why you don't see guys that have been sedentary and "preserved" until they're 40, taking up running, boxing, wrestling, etc, and making the big time when they're 45. It doesnt work like that. By that age, your "ceiling of potential" is already much lower. But you can of course, still make good personal progress and "show up" younger people that are more lackadaisical / sedentary.

Age is a very clear indicator of how athleticism, speed, agility, etc erodes away with time.

Using the fight choreography in Cobra Kai as an indicator of his slowness is a bad metric, because even the teens look slow when they fight in the show. The choreography in the show isn't that good.

The teens are supposed to be relative beginners to martial arts but certainly bring a lot more energy, speed and general athleticism to their fight scenes than Ralph Macchio.

Compare these scenes.

Honestly, there are a lot of "LOL" moments with Macchio where it's obvious that a high kick was super-imposed or filmed from behind (if using wide-angle) so that they could use a stunt double. Or that his "moves" are not at all realistic.

[Only Registered Users Can See LinksClick Here To Register]

1:14 This guy clearly cannot fight, has no flexibility. Is stiff as a board!

1:22 a stunt double is used when you can't see his face.

1:40 the old back and hips giving him jip trying to get up

Ask anyone why he looks so slow, weak and pathetic... What do you think they'll say?

Because he's 60 freaking years old!! You can't expect a 60 year old to move like a teen.

Luckily Cobra Kai isn't about great fight scenes or being a high-level martial arts show. It's comedy drama and on that level is still very entertaining. One of the few TV shows I keenly watch.

Guys in general (myself included) are also more willing to suspend their disbelief in an old man being a "master" when in reality he is slow, weak and frail. It was the same when Pat Morita played Mr. Miyagi.

This guy in reality obviously couldn't fight his way out of a wet paper bag but we suspended our disbelief in the Mr. Miyagi character.

[Only Registered Users Can See LinksClick Here To Register]

Even when people question the hokeyness of the scene, they do so in a humorous, light-hearted way;

"Miyagi chopped Johnny in the chest so hard it gave Johnny a black eye"

reply:

"Miyagi was a grandmaster, what do you expect."

Yet we get ANGRY and full of hate seeing women like Ruby Rose beating up men in movies like The Doorman. In real life however, I'd bet Rose would beat up Macchio quite easily.

A fit, fast and dynamic moving woman in her 30s beating up a 60 year old man wouldn't even be hot to fetishists, it would just be sad.

Yeah I've seen the show before..Robby's fight doesn't look any different to Daniel's. They look the same to me

And if Robby fought daniel, he would lose. Robby got one shotted by Johnny. When johnny and daniel fought, they were on par

In universe, johnny and daniel are far above the teens

As for men in their 50s or whatever, Keane reeves looked brutal in john Wick.

Same with daniel Craig in skyfall and Spectre. He looks fast and strong
