"Queen of the Ring" by Jaime Hernandez to be published August 2021

Jaime Hernandez, one half of the "Love & Rockets" comic team has been including female professional wrestling in his work since the beginning - including the four issue series "Whoa Nellie!".

The action has been absent in recent years but next year Hernandez is going to return to his fictional grappling world with a collection entitled "Queen of the Ring"

...and I am certainly eagerly looking forward to August next year (although, given the schedule of Love & Rockets volume 4, I'm inclined to take that date with a small pinch of salt).

I've done my best to keep up with this comic. It's the only one I still read. Hernandez' art is superb. The main story, about the lives of two teenage Latina punks in 80s LA who grow into interesting women is poignant and heart breaking. It starts off on shaky ground, with science fantasy elements, but moves to LA and its surroundings, where it becomes one of the best stories in the medium.

The main character, Maggie, was raised by her aunt, the wrestling champion, Vicky Glory. She was saved by the world's greatest wrestler, Queen Rena Tintañon, a recurring character in the comic, and Vicky's enemy. She trains as a wrestler, and becomes a ringside "manager" in later issues. She has numerous encounters with female superheroes, some of whom are basically just big, strong women. This great series is available in collections from Fantagraphics.
