Unhappy Backpage Shut Down!

Was wondering what everyone thoughts are on backpage being shut down:

Also, I am watching the Jeff Sessions hearing and they are talking about enforcing bans in pornography as well. With the UK ban and all, do you think we are getting close to the banning of fetish porn in the US as well?

Maybe somebody with more expertise than me wants to chime in, but a few points.

Backpage did collect advertising dollars for prostitution. There's little question there. They hired people to edit adds to make the prostitution less clear, but they left the adds up after editing, they didn't remove. Their CEO was charged for soliciting prostitution in October.

This shutdown of their classified section wasn't forced, it was voluntary and they did it on the eve of their senate hearing, to draw attention. They're big business, 135 million in revenues last year, obviously shutting down will temporarily turn off that revenue, but they feel they need to draw attention to this. It was timing on their part.

Craigslist is a legit business without their classified section, so they shut it down rather than face legal hassles in 2010. Backpage is basically all classifieds, so they don't have that option.

While Backpage clearly dealt in prostitution (I don't think there's any question), they are not without supporters. They've made it easier for people who work in the sex industry to be independent and it's easier for them to screen their clients, and while they did drive prices down they improved safety and did work with agencies on tracking down lost children and family members and by some studies decreased rapes and sexual disease transmission by getting sex workers off the streets.

As for the UK Porn "Ban", it wasn't a porn ban. It was a specific activities ban for sale. It greatly reduced Video on Demand by making much of the more exotic stuff like full bondage and gagging, face sitting, breath play, watersports (directly on another person), hard spankings (light spankings are still legal) . . . all that became illegal to sell in the UK, but not illegal to own or view, so it wasn't a ban it was a restriction. The public demonstrations of facesitting in protest were legal, cause that wasn't for profit. (now, I should add, the law gets a little complicated and it's not my area of expertise).

But Backpage's legal troubles aren't censorship related, it's prostitution charges. Their claim of censorship, to me, sounds false. Also, legal defense can get very expensive, so, sometimes, a charge is enough to shut a business down. being found not guilty in court after a long battle can (and has) bankrupted several businesses and individuals.

As to the Porn "ban", there will always be the occasional senator who's backed up by the christian right who will fight prostitution, but I don't think we're in any real risk of a porn ban in the US. Larry Flint won his supreme court case 8-0. There's little risk of a porn ban in the US.

Numerous articles on this available, a few below.

Good analysis. Turning the alleged "government pressure" into a conversation about the First Amendment is a fairly smart play, in my opinion. There's also a legit claim to be made.

If Backpage is promoting free market capitalism among consenting adults, they've got my support. But that's a tougher sell to the broader public opinion market than the c-word. So, by framing the conversation differently, they can potentially garner the support of more of the types of people they'll need onboard to win this fight.

I think they should just do what they want to do. They should not maintain any offices in the U.S. for now, but there is nothing apparent in their practices that is wrong. Alleged "money laundering"? C'mon, man.

The whole Backpage issue is about the conflation between sex work and sex trafficking. It's a complex topic and it seems so difficult to have a serene public debate about those matters. Now it's clearly a mediatic battle and the shut down is a strategy.

There is no direct link between this and the "UK ban", but both show how the selling and representation of sex is often perceived by political authorities as inherently bad. And it leads too easily to the marginalization of "otherness" (sex work/alternative sexualities). The new bill (Digital Economy Bill) discussed in the UK (about the censorship of adult websites that don't use age verification) is equally worrying in that sense.

*shrug*
Oh well. Much like WB270, Page-B never offered me much in my neighborhood because I didn't live in a big city. I still don't live in a big city, now that I think of it.

And because of that, there aren't....I mean there weren't many muscular pritty kitties to choose from and those that were around engaged in price gouging because they knew they could get away with it.

I make less than 15K a year so...I never saw much reason to indulge these con-women so, aside from adding a few pictures for me to wack off to on my computer, I never reaped much benefit from the whole thing.

*two finger salute*
It's been real, BP, I guess.

Yeah, man, I'd pour some liquor out for you, homie, but I don't have any. So, I'll pour some coffee out for you instead. Not right now, though. Tomorrow morning. I'll do it tomorrow morning; I drank my last drop of joe over three hours ago and I ain't got any time to make some more coffee because I gotta be up at 5 am, you see. And it's already past 8:30 in the evening.

So I'll buy some coffee at my job and pour some out for you then, Back-P.

If I can remember by then, that is; because I gotta lot on my mind and a whole lotta shit to do. But I promise, I'll try to remember to pour out some coffee for you tomorrow morning, homie.

Rest in peace, hope you in a better place, my bruvah.

I tried a few times to get sessions off of backpage but was never successful. In the end, the girls almost never called back. It was weird.

I have just stuck to Tempest since.

Weird is a very kind and gentle way of putting it. "It fucking sucked" is a much more apt description in my opinion.

So, it seems BP went back up, then got seized. I'm not really into the politics of it - I think that's been discussed enough as is, anyway - just wondering, anyone know what to use in place of Backpage? Where might escorts go to post their ads now? I live in a relatively small city, big enough for a fair selection of escorts, too small to find any session wrestlers.

This isn't about Backpage, but the subject matter is similar and could affect anyone who buys from C4S etc. I've managed to avoid adding comments that might be regarded as political, so could you all please do the same.

This struggle between conservative, puritan groups, policy makers and the porn industry has always existed. Things have slowly been getting better for adult content producers generally, but in the last several years it's been back and forth. It's definitely temporary. They will use whatever populist reasons they can come up with to stop or stifle the spread of "filth". This includes using children as well as human trafficking as arguments. It's getting old though, which is good. They used to bring up children as arguments against heavy metal, for example. These people do not understand such basic concepts as human liberty, freedom of speech and expression, and how crucial they are in the health and development of society.

But let's not forget that PornHub is a catastrophe. They are a massive pain in the ass of adult content producers who are not affiliated with them. They have minimum to no filtering of content when it comes to illegal videos, and are killing the industry by creating a haven for piracy. A big portion of their revenue comes from stolen content. It's honestly ridiculous that this overgrown tube site has become the leading name of the porn industry in such discussions.
