Default Sibling Boxing - Both Champions battle for The Golden Robe

Chapter 1 - A Winning Family

The Gupta family was entirely built on hard work. Sandeep had emigrated from North India to the United States and had built a small fortune on the back of what he called “blood, sweat and determination”. He was a smart man, and the very definition of a winner. And he pushed that attitude to his two children: his son Neel, 22, and his daughter Veronica, 19.

While Neel always tried hard in school, he was gifted athlete. He took up boxing at a young age and really took a liking to it. It might not have been the sport itself that he enjoyed as much as the feeling of dominating your opponent in the ring for multiple rounds, with the ultimate pleasure of knocking down another human being always a possibility. While he tried wrestling and martial arts, none of them gave him the feeling he enjoyed from winning a boxing match. In his eyes, it was the perfect way of determining your worth as a human being: the winner of a boxing match must be the superior man. And his father agreed. He enjoyed that his son was being so competitive and loved the feeling of watching him win a fight. It was not clear though whether what drove his son was a love of winning or a deathly fear of losing.

Regardless, that drive led him to become quite the successful boxer. Neel, had just completed his last year in his local university league as the undefeated champion. He went 12-0 with 5 victories by knockout in the process. Even more impressive was that the local league was small enough that there were no weight classes, and he was not the largest boxer by any stretch of the imagination. After competing in the university league for all 4 years of his college education, he had finally won “The Golden Robe” in his final match.

The Golden Robe was a robe that was once owned by the best university boxer in the city. Every year, it was presented to the champion of the league. It’s difficult to overstate how much of an honor being able to put on The Golden Robe is for the competitors. Neel had dreamed of it for years. And after winning his championship fight by knockout, he was finally going to have it presented to him at the awards ceremony on Saturday.

Veronica was also athletic. She competed in track and gymnastics growing up and was quite the competitor herself. While she did not enjoy losing, it was clear that her motivation was always driven by a desire to win instead of a fear of losing. And she had won plenty of events too, but when she arrived at the same university, she was more focused on her academics than competing in any intense sports.

However, last year when the university opened a women’s division for boxing, her father insisted she join. “To not do so would be against the family honor” he said. She was not too keen on the idea at first, but the sport quickly grew on her. It pushed her to her physical limits, which she enjoyed. But what she really loved was the fact that she was quite gifted for the sport. While the competition level was certainly sub-par, considering it was the first year the women’s division was offered, Veronica breezed through to be crowned champion. After a few losses during the exhibition stage, she went undefeated through the season and playoffs to win her championship match and do proud on the Gupta name.

The university created a new robe for the winner of the women’s division to wear: The Pink Robe. When the women’s division was set up, they needed to create a new item for the victor like the golden robe. But, given the history behind it, they only had one. The head of the league did not want to “diminish” the symbol that was the golden robe by creating a second one, so they decided to create a pink one for the ladies. Veronica was set to receive the robe at the same awards ceremony.

But Veronica hated it. As a devoted feminist, she thought the idea of giving the women’s division a “lesser” item was an insult to all she had done in the past year. She thought that the original golden robe should be shared between the two winners and that they should be looked at as equals in that regard. Neel, of course, disagreed. After four years of competing in the league he finally had won the right to The Golden Robe, why should Veronica have a right to half of it just because she got lucky in her first year when she didn’t even want to join in the first place?

Veronica, being an attractive and successful woman on campus, was able to gain support for her cause. #ShareTheRobe was quickly trending on campus. The league head did not know what to do. On one hand, he did not like the idea of sharing the robe. On the other, he was aware that it was a problem that was not likely to go away. He proposed a bold idea: the two champions would fight for the right to The Golden Robe at the awards ceremony on Saturday. He called Veronica and Neel to his office to propose the idea.

Neel loved it. He thought he had just finished his last fight ever, and that he would ride off into the sunset as a champion. But, what better way to go out than to win one more easy fight. He was sure to win in dominating fashion. He was taller and bigger than Veronica and had a decade more experience. This was a great way to be “equal”. Not only would he get to put the robe over his shoulders, but he would be able to smash her feminism talk in the process.

Veronica initially thought that her plan had backfired, but she agreed to the idea anyway. She was backed into a corner and did not have a choice but to accept. The more she thought about it though, the more she loved it. She knew from her training that size and strength were only two parts of the equation in boxing, and that if she could be quick and stick to her training, she might be able to pull it off. Winning the robe would just be extra, beating Neel and taking it from him would be the best prize.

Their mother did not love the idea but knew they were both competitors and did not stand in their way. Their father, however, loved it. He always enjoyed that their sibling rivalry had pushed them to better themselves. He knew that part of the reason that Veronica had joined the league was because she was jealous of Neel's success in it. Now, they would battle it out. Whoever wins would get the robe and the bragging rights, and the loser would be second best and would have to accept it. He could think of no better way than to settle a sibling rivalry. While he was confident that Neel would dominate the fight, he didn’t see it as a sure thing. He knew Veronica was a confident woman and skilled boxer. She had that “x-factor” that somehow meant she always found a way to ended up a winner.

The fight was announced and suddenly it was the talk of the campus. Usually, no one cared much for boxing, but suddenly everyone knew what they were doing on Saturday night. The small gym was quickly sold out and the school even made plans to stream the fight online for those who could not get tickets.

Brother vs Sister. Champion vs Champion. The Battle for The Golden Robe. It was sure to be unforgettable for everyone.

To be continued with both the fight and renders…

Awesome read. I just hope that the match is not completely one-sided and that both get knockdowns. In the end, she poses with her foot on his chest.

Chapter 2 - Neel goes for the knockout

There were only a few days to get ready for both of them. It didn’t matter though, considering they were both still fresh off their victories from their respective championships. It only needed to be decided how the match would proceed. The men’s division fought matches of three 3 minute rounds, while the women fought three 2 minute rounds. The chair of the women’s league proposed to split the difference and make in three 2:30 minute rounds. The head of the men’s league however, refused. “The Golden Robe has always been fought for over three-minute rounds. That’s not going to stop now.” It was a distinct advantage for Neel.

It’s not really like he needed it either. All of Neel’s knockouts this season had come in the first round. He had a quite simple strategy of pulverizing his opponent from the start and ending it early. Even in the fights he had not managed to knock his opponents out, his performance in the first and second rounds were usually enough to allow him to coast through the final round. His mindset was no different this time around. He had enough of the feminism talk from Veronica and wanted to remind her who the boss was between them. He was almost insulted that she wanted to share the robe and wanted to punish her for it. The quicker he could knock her out, the better.

Veronica was confident in her abilities, but more calculated in her mindset. This would be by far the toughest opponent she had ever faced. She knew she would have to do everything she could to prolong the fight as long as possible just to have a chance on points. She knew there was a huge risk of her being knocked out in humiliating fashion in front of the whole university, but she accepted that. She wanted to have the chance to compete for the robe, and now she was getting that chance.

While the two of them still lived at home, they did not speak to each other at all for the days leading up to the fight. There was certainly a nervous tension in the air of the household, with the 300 lb elephant of the Saturday night fight always in the room. At dinner Friday night, Sandeep made it clear to his family that there was to be no jealousy once the fight was over. The loser should accept the result, regardless of who that may be. He then particularly looked at Veronica and told her that if she lost the next night, that there was to be no more talk about sharing ownership of the robe, and that the result would be final. Veronica was a little ticked that her father singled her out when saying this, but she understood where he was coming from.

Veronica arrived at the gymnasium hours before the fight. She wanted time to get ready and relax before the big evening. She laced on her favorite boxing outfit: her black and gold monokini, and listened to calming music in her ears as she lay in her locker room mentally preparing for the fight. An hour before the fight, her best friends show up to her room to wish her luck. They ask if she is nervous, but Veronica brushes off their concerns “no, I’m excited.”

Her coach, Julie, joins her in her locker room as the noise of spectators filing into the gymnasium becomes audible. Julie walks her through a few more tactical reminders but mostly focuses on building up Veronica’s confidence. To her amazement, she is as confident as she has ever seen her. Julie did not share the sentiment. While she knew Veronica was an exceptional boxer and one of the best talents she had ever worked with, this was a task above all else. Neel was several inches taller than her and outweighed her by dozens of pounds. Success, to Julie, was to avoid Veronica getting embarrassed.

Neel did not need that much motivation. He and his coach were in his locker room going over the game plan, which was to attack early and often, and to focus on landing as many punches to her head as he could. They were both confident that a knockout in either the first or second round was a foregone conclusion. If the unthinkable happened and she managed to avoid that, Neel would certainly win on points.

As they both walked out into the gymnasium, it was clear this was not just another fight. The seats were all filled, and the cheers were louder than they had been all season. From opposite sides, the siblings made their way towards the elevated ring in the center of the room. Veronica waved to all the people cheering her on as she walked over. She could not believe the outpouring of support from all the women on campus. She almost got tears in her eyes as she saw them cheering for her and did not want to let them down.

They both made their way to the ring avoiding all eye contact with each other as they went to their respective corners. The referee from ringside, announced all the formalities and rules that no one in the room really cared about. Veronica and Neel walked towards each other and met in the center of the ring. As he looked at her, he could not stand the smug, confident look on her face. He wanted it wiped off as soon as possible. They touched gloves and the bell rang to begin the first round.

Veronica bounced around in a defensive stance and prepared herself for what was about to come. Neel unleashed hell as soon as the bell struck. He went for an uppercut, then a left jab followed by another uppercut. The uppercut landed on Veronica’s chin causing her to lose her balance and fall back, but she caught herself on the back rope. If Neel had not been so concentrated, he might have burst out laughing like his coach did. Julie, ringside, just put her head in her hands.

Neel threw a few more combinations that knocked Veronica further off balance. She just kept dodging the worst of it though. The end of the fight looked near, and it was only a minute old. Neel had thrown dozens and dozens of punches in a blind rage, and Veronica had just spent the entire first sixth of the fight on the defensive. She didn’t look panicked though. Her face was concentrated in her defensive posture and it didn’t look like she was concentrated on anything expect dodging and blocking anything she could.

And Neel just kept coming for more. He threw a few more combinations at Veronica but they were not landing like he would have hoped. Her defensive strategy was quite effective, and this only enraged him more. While Veronica was completely on the defensive and certainly in an inferior position, she was able to dodge, duck and block a lot of the punches he was sending her way.

Enraged, he threw a giant right hook at his sister’s head, but she ducked out of the way and connected a strike to his chest. It was not strong, but it was the first strike she landed on her brother in the match. Neel just kept coming, chasing the knockout that had eluded him so far. He trapped her in a corner and sent a raging attack of punch after punch, uppercut then hook, hook then uppercut. But Veronica protected her face behind her gloves and managed to avoid the worst of it. That is not to say she wasn’t being hit. She was struggling to maintain her balance as the blows just kept coming from Neel who look determined to knock her out before the end of the round. But Veronica was just a little too good on the defense and managed to scurry around as the bell rung to end the first round, a decisive victory for the older brother.

Neel had attempted 137 punches in the first round but only landed 34 of them. Veronica had attempted just 5 and landed 1. But Neel went to his corner panting and frustrated that he had not been able to knock her out. Still, his coach was positive, calling his first-round performance “an incredible onslaught, worthy of a champion.” Neel huffed and puffed as he leaned on his corner and drank some water, trying to recuperate some energy.

Veronica made her way to her corner, a bit sore but not physically looking any worse than when she started. It was clear though that even if she miraculously avoided a knockout, that she would lose in humiliating fashion on points. It was going to take a miracle just to avoid the knockout.

Julie looked Veronica in the eyes as she massaged her shoulders and gave her some encouragement “It’s ok Veronica. Just keep playing defense like you are. If you can just avoid getting knocked-out, we walk out of here as huge winners in my eyes.”

“What are you talking about, Julie?” replied Veronica, a devious smile forming on her face as she turns to look across the ring at Neel “I’ve got him right where I want him.”

To be continued…
