Default Maroulis: First Olympic Gold for US

I don't know if people on this site are aware, that Helen Maroulis is the first US girl to win a gold in wrestling, defeating Yoshida of Japan 4-1.
This should be a big thing for women's wrestling in the country. I've been waiting for it almost 30 years!

It's barely getting any coverage. Now if she decides to do some nightclub partying to celebrate, and pisses inaccurately at a Brazilian gas station stop and then makes up a story about it, then she'll get coverage!

Very impressive achievement, particularly considering the record of her opponent. My understanding is Yoshida is 3 times Olympic Champion and 13 times World Champion.

She had won over 100 matches when she was defeated by an American girl, Marcie van Dusen; but that was several years ago.

U.S. wrestler reacts to Ryan Lochte overshadowing her gold medal win
Alec McQuade, WXIA

RIO DE JANEIRO -- Helen Maroulis won the first gold medal in U.S. women's wrestling, a historically significant accomplishment.

But when she won, most of the attention was not on her, or even the games. Rather, it was all on the biggest distraction of the Olympics: Ryan Lochte and the U.S. swimmers' false reporting of a crime.

It was a great moment. Maroulis, who trained her entire life to win a gold medal, was very emotional after her victory. When she won, she fell to her knees, buried her head into her hands and sobbed. It was all just so surreal for her.

She explained later that she cried -- not just because of all the sacrifices she has made, but the sacrifices of her family and coaches.

“It’s one thing that I’m going to sacrifice for my own dream, but it’s a whole other ballgame when you know that someone else is sacrificing for your dreams, that my parents are sacrificing for my dreams, that my coach sacrificed for my dreams. He’s not getting the glory that I get. He doesn’t get the medal, my parents don’t get the medal. I was just crying because now I have this to share with all of them,” she said to the media after her victory.

What a moment. Too bad it was overshadowed by some boneheaded-decisions by some immature guys while they were drunk. Seriously, is it too much to ask for a little attention after winning the gold medal?

“I didn’t come here to win a gold medal for the media attention,” Maroulis said. "I didn’t come here to win a gold medal in order to find something within myself or some peace within myself. I found that self-worth before I stepped on the mat. I think that’s why I won the gold medal."

“If they covered Ryan Lochte over my match, well, I think that’s a poor decision on their part, but I’m not running the show. My job is to be a wrestler, and I stepped on the mat and did what I needed to do. I’m happy with the results.”

What an amazing response.

Maroulis is already planning on winning another medal in four years in Tokyo.

Let's face it, Helen Maroulis could have won ten matches against ten world champions and that bozo Lochte would still get the press. Her accomplishment was fantastic and will be greatly appreciated in some circles. Most of the people would rather read about some bum who makes an ass of himself and causes international problems with several lies. That's stupidity for ya.

Well at least it's getting some attention (on Ronda Rousey's twitter for example) and other folks social media for NOT getting attention from NBC. Some folks are complaining. Hopefully NBC will try to make up for that, if belatedly.

Maybe she will even wind up on breakfast cereal boxes, like Mary Lou Retton.
That would be great for wrestling, actually. Although I feel sorry for all those guys getting pinned by their sisters LOL

"WAH! Nobody's celebrating my new favorite athlete's accomplishment!"

Then why is she complaining about Lochte?
