Plus fluid, graceful movement that probably comes from being trained as a classical ballerina.

One problem I have, and I've said this before, is that action heroines of today carry little to no charm in that their character is being played by a woman. They are too hardy, too focussed, too manly...
I agree, yet I disagree. Its true, I have seen many female protagonist "played" or "acted" in a way that is generally "un-feminine". Perhaps the actress doesn't wear alot of makeup, or does not dress dainty. Perhaps she does not give off an aura of sexuality. But the part that I kinda disagree with is "Too hardy, too focused". Basically, a women can be strong-willed, confident, and focused, and still be feminine. Unless of coure, you feel that only a lack of these things (focus, confidence, physical robustness) can be considered feminine.

Sure, they can be those things (focussed, confident and physical). What I'm really criticising, I guess, is bad writing and to some extent, bad casting. That's what a lot of movies and TV shows suffer from when it really comes down to it.

Take for example Barb Wire. Pam Anderson in her prime. Black leather boots, catsuits and cleavage. But the movie sucked. Barb was uninteresting and unlikeable.

Summer Glau in 'The Sarah Connor Chronicles' didn't need to sell sex, wear a lot of makeup, dress provocatively or be dainty (she was a cyborg - beyond human) to radiate femininity and likeableness. Sometimes she did everything not to be liked - she was ruthless, cold and said hurtful things but that was tempered with an almost angelic-like innocence, curiosity and the chance that she could change. You wanted to cheer for her and couldn't help but like her.

Fleshing out the character and making them multi-faceted with strengths and weaknesses, flaws and psychological baggage is what really makes a character cross over.

Another bad example would be Gina Carano in Haywire. Ok, it had a good scissor scene! But was Mallory likeable? Was she charming, endearing?... Did we really care about her? No. Well, not me anyway. Black ops super-soldier gets double-crossed on a mission. Been done to death. Sticking a woman in there is not going to change anything.

But Gina as 'Ava' in the film 'In The Blood' was completely the opposite. She was perfectly cast in this movie. A real person with a background, emotional baggage and a loose cannon when provoked. This movie revelled in its simplicity and along with Dredd, is one of the few action films from the past decade I'd watch again.

Default Re: The Avengers' Mrs Peel!

Like many members of a certain age (I'm now in my seventh decade),"The Avengers" was very much an early influence. Emma Peel and later, less so, Tara King both had a profound affect - I was too young for Cathy Gale (although Honor Blackman was always more my type). Likewise, Joanna Lumley (Purdey in "The New Avengers") was a truly stunning woman, although I preferred the original "Avengers" to the revamped 70s series (Gambit played by Gareth Hunt was such a smug irritant!)
Other individual incidents also influenced my love of mixed combat such as Graeme Kent's book on wrestling, various self defence displays, certain martial arts books I borrowed from the library and even some apache dancers on a TV show featuring Mirielle Matthieu, but the character of Emma Peel made a lasting impression. I thank her for her athleticism, grace, skill, stamina and sexual magnetism, she was a great actress and a classy act. RIP.

Yes, bad writing, casting, and acting are endemic(?) in Hollywood cinema. Its more the rule than the exception. I think to an extent, this driven by economics as well as an assumption on the part of production companies that "the masses are asses".
Its not just female protagonists that are often poorly written and cast...the same applies for male or female heros, villians, victims, mentors. rouges, etc. in a lot of films.

There is a lot that goes into making a compelling character that is not dull or one-dimensional. You have to have good screenwriting, directing, casting, and acting. Sometimes one of those things done well can compensate for poorly done other things. I have seen good actors and actresses salvage poorly written dialouge to some extent, I have seen good directors make the most out of a bad script.
