Default Cris Cyborg, GOAT

I don't think any of us would describe Cris Cyborg as beautiful and fewer still would want to go mano a mano with her in the cage or on the mats. But credit where credit is due, it is she, not Amanda Nunes, who is the GOAT of women's MMA. Cris has been fighting longer against comparable opposition, has a better record than Amanda and is the only person of either sex to hold championship belts in four major MMA promotions. It's only because she once lost to Amanda, one of only two losses for her, that there is even the shadow of a doubt. Too bad, we'll never get a re-run of that one.

I totally agree that Cyborg is the greatest woman in the history of MMA. One fight can't make a difference. I think you have to evaluate any fighter's career in its entirety. Cyborg has been destroying her opponents for almost 20 years, and has been a champion in all the major leagues. Yes, Amanda did great things from 2016-2023, but let's also consider her career from 2008 - 2014. At that time, she was losing by TKO to Cat Zingano and Alexis Davis. And even Sarah D'Alelio managed to beat her (does anyone know who she is?)

It's a fair shout. She's the "grand slam champion" with 4 belts in 4 organisations... She was on top back when BJ Penn and Shogun Rua were champs... That's testament to how long she has been competing at championship level.

But when you talk about legacy, the first thing anyone will ask is "who have they beaten" ... And unfortunately, she just doesn't have the body of work that Nunes has; Tate, Rousey, Holm, Shevchenko, Pena, de Randamie and a win over Cyborg herself. A first round KO, no less. All of these women champions in their own right.

Who is the best fighter Cyborg has beaten? Holly? Budd? Coenen? 41 year old Cat? Then you get into all the Blencowes, and blown up 125/135ers like Lansberg, Kunitskaya, Smith, Evinger... All fighting out of their natural weight classes and were never UFC champions.

Sometimes, "I just got caught" is a legitimate excuse. And I think it's a legitimate excuse for Cyborg in that instance. Her loss to Nunes wasn't a fair reflection of how competitive she could have made that fight.

Nunes had the opportunity to come back and avenge her loss to Pena and there's little doubt in my mind she could have avenged her loss to Zingano.

Unfortunately Cyborg won't get the opportunity to avenge her loss to Nunes, so in terms of her legacy, it's why a win over Kayla Harrison would, at this point, be important for her legacy.

I recently read that Cyborg said fighting Cat was a "tune up" for the stylistic match up she expects from Kayla. So I hope that fight happens.

With PFL acquiring Bellator, Cyborg has a chance to bag a belt in yet another major MMA franchise and perhaps add Kayla Harrison to her long list of victims. Something to look forward to in 2024. Dare we hope?

Cris Cyborg had another boxing fight this weekend and won by knockout.
By the way, she now has a 4-0 record in boxing. It would be interesting to see her next against some champions.
