Soccer seems to be one of the worst sports for women for some reason. in sports like tennis or volleyball or hokey or even mma the women sometimes get close to male performance .but for some reason in soccer the gap between the genders is bigger .just look at most pro female soccer players they don't even have much muscle. they look like random women i see jogging every day. male soccer players look huge compared to the average man.

It's even more odd when you consider that the biggest difference between men and women is upper body strength, not lower

Depends who you're focussing on. A lot of them really aren't huge.

Lionel Messi is regarded as one of the GOAT players and he's 5'7, 72KG.

From a British perspective, Michael Owen, Wayne Rooney and David Beckham wouldn't particularly impress anyone with their stature or physique. Owen was a Ballon d'Or winner.

Messi is the greatest of all time. And he's able to out maneuver and physically compete with men bigger and stronger than him. Speed and timing is the key in football.

Pele and Maradona, who are also considered top 5 of all time, are also small men.

Skill is a major reason but they need the athleticism to make that skill work at a world class level. So really they're just incredibly fast, have great timing and very explosive.

It's not always about visible muscle size. Serena and Venus William's lost to Karstaan Braasch in 1998. Braasch was ranked in the 200s for a male player and did not train very hard against the sisters. He was described by one journalist as "a man whose training regime centred around a pack of cigarettes and more than a couple bottles of ice cold lager".

Granted the sisters were 16 and 17, so vastly pre prime. However they were physically fully developed and packing a lot of visible muscle. Yet they were not able to defeat a man who visually didn't look muscular at all and was eating/drinking like shit. Now make no mistake, Braasch was a top tier athlete, so he is not an average man by any stretch. However his appearance wasn't that of what you would expect from a top tier athlete. Yet his actual performance is in that range.

Here is Serena William's many years later saying she would unequivocally lose to Andy Murray and other male players

Serena looks a lot more muscular than Andy Murray, yet here she is admitting Murray is stronger and faster than her. You've also got boxers like Tyson Fury who are very fast yet don't look like it

So I wouldn't put much stock into female players not looking muscular. Athletic performance isn't about looks.

That's a team of professional male players (they play in the english 4th division so while not elite they are already in the top 0,1 % of soccer players, they are very far from an average, grass root level team) composed half of young, currently active players and half of players that retired just a year ago facing a team of professional women that almost all retired around 10 year ago and none of them is currently playing for the actual women's usa national team (and some of them never did even when they used to play)

It's still a very embarassing loss and it's undeniable there is a truly huge gap between genders in soccer (it's actually a lot bigger than in most sports, combat sports included), however it's a completely different look from the "current USA women's team gets beaten by old retired male players" narrative that get parroted around the web by many youtube channels with tens millions of views to make it seems worse than it is.

It's actually almost the other way around, it's pretty much a team of current male players trashing a team of long-retired women which should not surprise anyone:

"While the women’s team consisted of retired USWNT International players, Wrexham brought along a few club legends, some seasoned veterans, and even a few players from their current roster."
Quote:
"In practice, this meant that former USWNT player Lori Lindsey, who retired in 2014, came up against Scott Butler, a fresh-faced 20-year-old who signed for Wrexham just last season.2
Quote:
"But to clarify, the primary squads of these teams were not present in the competition. And instead, they were represented by an alternative squad comprised of club legends and ex-players. The same can be said about the Wrexham Red Dragons and US Women, as both teams were made up of former players, and not current stars"

Quote:
"When it came to the ‘US Women’ team, not a single player currently plays with the official United States women’s national soccer team, which is set to play in the World Cup in Australia this month.

Quite a few of the players never actually played for the national side, and according to the team’s profile on the TST site, most of of the US players no longer play for any team officially, while some retired from professional football more than a decade ago.

The same is true for some of the ‘Wrexham Red Dragons’ players, despite suggestions that the side was made up of players from the club that had fallen on hard times in the UK, but which has begun to find success again after being bought by US actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

A number of those in the squad still play football at a professional level in Wales and, in one case, England.

Two of them are 20-year-old youth players for Wrexham, while one is a senior goalkeeper for the club; another player plays for Port Vale in the third tier of the English league, while another plays for Welsh side Bala Town and featured in the team who lost to League of Ireland side Sligo Rovers in last year’s Europa Conference League qualifiers."
You can check out the age and the year of retirement of all the players involved in the tournament's site:

Soccer is one of the biggest sports in the world. So if males float to the top they are really good. Question of numbers.
Women soccer (some countries excluded) is not that bog yet and in a lot of countries the women were banned from competing till quite not that long ago. We are talking about decades here. So the pond to fish from is not that big, and there is not as much history and structure yet in women's football.
That explains partially the gap. The gap will become smalle though, and then things like physical ability will come into play. And the sin ce men are on average taller and stronger than females there will still be a gap ON AVERAGE. I foresee that in a few decades there are women who can compete with the best of men, but they will remain the exceptions.

Aim challenge. Lesbian female María Leon beats a field of top male footballers even though she's a centre back, theoretically the position with the pooresst technical skills. She got twice as many points as stars like Karim Benzema, Xavi Hernandez and Xavi Alonso. Cesar Azpilicueta got zero points even though he's an international player playing for a top team. This proves the skills gap is gone despite the fact that still many fewer women play the game globally.
