Wow

Fantastic match.

I'm really stunned by their skill and muscles.
UFC have really progressed quickly. These femlales would wiped the mat with fighters 20 years ago.

Watching V. Shevchenko Vs. Murphy last night highlights once again, the importance of genetics and athleticism.

You either got it or you don't.

At this level, everyone works hard. Everyone is experienced and skilled. Lauren Murphy is a hard worker. That was basically her strongest selling point being used to hype her up as if she had any chance. She was in great shape and was on a streak. She had the desire and willpower; the will to win.

Sure, there are examples of hard work and experience and willpower beating talent. But in this case I really don't think Valentina was spending longer in the gym than Murphy or necessarily "working harder".

It's just that Murphy is nowhere near the athlete Valentina is.

Their platforms are not the same. They just don't have the same DNA. It really is like comparing a Thoroughbred to an old nag; a carthorse. All the training in the world isn't going to make her as fast and dynamic as Valentina is now. It's an unobtainable level for most.

Even compared to her own sister, Antonina. Same coach, same instilled work ethic but why is Valentina so much more successful?

Because she's the superior genetic specimen.

It really is, to a large degree, as simple as that. Genetics are everything.

Valentina is incredibly skilled. How many people (MMA/fight fans) are paying to watch her fight?

I don't see how she won, Santos got her back 2 1/2 times and had a body triangle.

It just wasn't a good enough performance to take a girl's belt.

I've never had a problem with "close rounds go the way of the champion" because if you're going to crown a new champion, it should be definitive.

But there has always been a huge lack of transparency and inconsistency in the way MMA/UFC fights are scored and judged.

Some judges focus mostly on strikes landed. Some like "control time" and more recently, damage inflicted.

Holly had a lot of control time and (off the top of my head) landed more overall strikes on Veira but Veira was declared the winner as 2 judges thought she inflicted more damage and landed the more quality "significant" strikes.

So that fight was judged more like a Boxing match, favouring quality over quantity. For the most part, MMA judging has been the opposite. They judge on quantity over quality.

The fact one of the judges gave it 49-46 to Shevchenko – and you only needed one judge to swing it – discredits the whole system.

There's no way you could've given Shevchenko four rounds .. It's either incompetence or it's suspect .. And I've always thought of her as the most talented and technical fighter in the sport – but she didn't have answers .. And only significant damage was a head clash

That sounds like feelings decided the fight.

I've got to think there's either real incompetence – and one judge is just playing with his phone .. Or maybe the UFC leans on a judge to swing it one way or the other, based on who they want to promote and set up for fights.

Or it's people placing large bets on fights, buying a judge off .. Because it happens too often .. They'd have had to give Valentina rounds she spent entirely on her back.

Talia Santos looks amazing though
