Default Those were the days!!!!

The interest in my earlier thoughts on A.I.A.and Festelle Video inspired a few more memories.
Our friend FootPower set me thinking about those visits to Greek Street and almost waiting till the coast was clear before hurriedly entering the Swish Shop.It seems almost comical now that on a hot summer day you would wait till the drinkers went back inside to refresh their pints and then hoping the coast was clear to come out.
I do recall in an act of sheer bravado once coming out of the shop with the latest A.I.A.in the usual brown paper bag and entering the pub for a pint, almost tempting the drinkers to say something, they didn't!!!
I haven't been around that part of the country for sometime,so for the benefit of those fans like me I have managed to dig up a few pics from the time showing Greek Street looking from Soho Square. In one you can clearly see that pub No 7 Geek Street,Pillars of Hercules with the brown door of Swish Publications Shop next door.
The other pics are more of the front covers of our former bible Amazons in Action.

I went to the shop in 2000 (I'm from the U.S.), and it didn't look like that. IIRC, the shop was in a stand-alone building. It was 47 Great Guilford Street. Maybe some buildings had been torn down by then. I was with my ladyfriend and had to kind of sneak away. I took the Tube pretty much to the other side of London, and I ended up getting there some 10 minutes after they had closed! Very disappointing. I would love to find some of the first 10-20 issues.

Wow, I was 16 the first time I went to Greek Street, bought a few VHS tapes (still got them somewhere) and a few magazines. I live in Manchester so I had to get a coach down to London. first time I'd ever been and the only reason I went was to go to that shop.

Being a 6' 18 stone 16 year old I had no problems buying the stuff there

Wasn't overly impressed with London and I've not been since I was 18 and started using the postal service for my 'goods'. I found other avenues to get what I needed as an impressionable teenager, second hand books stores on Shudehill in Manchester and the like, and no, I never get embarrassed so it never bothered me going in for them. In fact I was buying Sadie Stern's Monthly on my way home from school

In the early 80s, I remember the Newport Court shop off Leicester Square on the fringe of Chinatown. Once I was walking by, with then girlfriend Suzy, and she suggested we pop in "for a giggle". We then purchased "Aggressive Women" numbers 4 to 7 "for a laugh" and she put me in some holds, back at hers' "for fun"- happy days !

A copy of "Aggressive Women" Number 7 (purple cover) featuring the Sue Brittain v Jane St John historic bout at Wimbledon in August 1979 with Jane giving Sue a leg spread on that cover recently was sold on ebay for about £12.50; it would be brilliant if the buyer could share some of the photos such as the Pics Unlimited, the Brittain bout and a Sue Sexton mixed feature with this forum.

Other fans memories of Newport Court reminded me of one feature of the shop which in this day would almost be a museum piece.
The Film Booth!!!!Before the first video booths started to appear in porn shops the world over Swish had at the rear of their shop a couple of film booths where Super 8mm Film was projected onto a white panel on the back of the door, while the punter armed with a handful of fifty pence coins could watch the film of the day/week on a revolving loop basis. This meant that should he run out of coins and have get more from the shops assistant there was every chance the film would be back at a point he had already seen.
One of the assistants many duties involved the ability to use a mop as quite often the booth would have a rather sticky floor.
Like our friend Laura Lover I more than once took the wife there and despite having a handful of fifty pence coins we were refused entry to the film booth.Strange World!!!

It may be of interest to some of you to know there is a Yahoo group dedicated to Swish publications, its well worth a look, the photo gallery alone will keep you occupied for ages.
The only snag you have to apply to the moderator for membership, but should be no problem for genuine fans.

Ah, yes - those were the days - but there was no internet then of course to make this forum possible, and the sharing of films.
How well I remember stumbling upon the shop by accident, and later returning for the first of many furtive visits, each time bearing away the latest copy of AiA or ?Women's Wrestling to a place where it could be safely inspected - but as soon as possible! Sometimes a particular issue wasn't quite up to expectations, and then there was a slight disappointment.
The very first things I remember seeing in the first mag I bought were the Judell reports - it seemed like another planet. But then quite soon there were reports from the UK: Edinburgh Ring Club (whatever happened to them? I'd be fascinated to hear - the girls seemed very attractive as well as well-trained, and wrestled in a ring), John Brotchie (ditto the above, except the ring) and then eventually I started going to film evenings (anyone else remember the Roebuck?), tournaments and sessions - now, I just wish I'd started those activities sooner.
Interesting to hear about the eBay price recently! I'll hang on to my copies, I think....

PS Didn't the shop move at some stage? to another street close by - Frith Street? The Great Newport Street address was only ever an office, I guess.
