Article about the history of strongwomen in the Victorian era. Seems like some of you all could use the history lesson.

But, but, but... Women can't be stronger than men without steroids! Women can't build muscle without steroids!

Great find, I will link it the next time someone says that every single girl with just a little bit of muscle mass "must be on steroids".

A lot of people can't wrap their minds around the fact that genetic disparity from person to person can be huge. In today's namby-pamby, all-inclusive, liberal times, people are taught anyone can be anything and it's all as simple as choice. It's not because some people are born better than others with more potential. If you train like Usain Bolt you'll be just as good and if you aren't as good, it must be because he takes steroids.

Look back at some pre-steroid era bodybuilders like Eugen Sandow, George Eiferman and Reg Park. Let's face it, if they were around today, most would accuse them of being on gear. But they didn't have access to steroids.

Of course people can be skeptical, drugs are easily obtainable today and what is naturally achievable isn't always naturally achieved.

On the flip side to men previously mentioned, you have the likes of "The Fake Coach" Jason Blaha - over 20 years of lifting weights and drug usage and this is the result...

In my experience this is not even the main problem, plenty of people have no problem admitting that the genetic disparity between individuals can be huge, ranging from a skinny and uncoordinated 110 lbs guy with little potential to an huge 250 lbs muscular and athletic guy who doesn't use steroids.

Yet these same people seem to think this applies only to men and they claim that a woman can't possibly be stronger than a man (barring maybe the bottom 1-2% of men) or develop any muscle mass whatsoever without using steroids ("muh they have not testosterone!!!!").

I don't think it's a matter of underestimating the disparity between individuals, but of underestimating women since they are triggered by the possibility of "natural women" stronger than them existing.

True. But I maintain people do underestimate the difference among genders, not just between them. I see people on MMA message boards arguing that fighters like Paulo Costa can't possibly be natural because he's a lot more muscular than Johnny who's been lifting for a decade but still looks like a melted candle. The "fake natty" arguments are everywhere.

Not to mention that muscle size does not directly correlate with muscle strength.
