Goga Tupuria, a russian strongman competitor and strenght, conditioning and fitness expert with insane athleticism and previous BJJ/grappling experience (there are many videos of him training in various grappling sports dating as far as back as 2018), faces a female BJJ purple belt in three submission grappling matches.

She submitted him with a triangle in the first, she won the second on points and they draw in the third.

The first match takes place from 10:47 to 12:02, the second one from 15:40 to 16:55 and the third one from 17:55 to 19:25.

Some of you may feel disappointed because she struggled so much with a guy close to her size, but you should not be fooled by his small size and unimpressive appereance, he is no average fitness enthusiast at all.

He is a true genetic freak with elite level strenght to weight ratio, athleticism, balance, speed, reflexes and coordination as you can see:

(here he deadlift 180 kg/400 lbs while balancing them on a brick):

His youtube channel and social media accounts are full of crazy and impressive feats of strenght, athleticism, agility and body awareness.

P.S: If you are wondering why they stopped at 19:07 is because he went for a neck crank submission which is illegal in BJJ/submission grappling.

she had a good triangle clamped on him but it looked like it was not tight enough to make him tap.

I watched it again and you are right, she won the first match on advantages instead of by submission, my mistake.

There is also a part at 12:30 where her instructor showed her what she should have done to finish the triangle but I missed it on my first watch because I skipped the parts where they were not grappling.

Good videos.

I think this basically backs up what I've been saying on this forum in recent years.

Strength and athleticism, explosiveness (mobility, balance, coordination, etc) absolutely do matter and can be hard attributes to overcome.

The girl appears to be no Jane Average either. I'm guessing she competes and takes the sport very seriously, is physically fit and strong in her own right, too.

But within seconds, she thought her best chance was to pull guard and work from her back but we see the ease at which he could just pick her up and slam her (if he wanted to, but again, the narrative wasn't for anyone to get hurt). Physical strength just rendering a large portion of BJJ technique useless.

To do that you need a lot of compound strength - core, spinal erectors that can be trained from heavy deadlifts, squats, rows, overhead presses, etc. They say physiques don't win fights but in the case of a trained lifter vs. a BJJ player and non-lifter, the non-lifter will have their work cut out for sure and there would be many cases where the strength disparity would simply be insurmountable. You need strength to make a lot of these techniques work!!

Trouble is, a lot of your Joe/Jane Average, once/twice a week McDojo attendees have probably never grappled with someone that strong. They think a big fat dude that outweighs them by 100lbs is "stronger" and beatable so it proves to them BJJ can overcome size and strength - which it can... But there are levels. Most people don't have the physical strength to pick someone up from an awkward angle like that. Even guys that are considered big and strong, maybe who go to the gym and do biceps curls, work in manual labour, etc. There are levels to everything!

Same can happen vice/versa . See,this is why I say an Olympic weightlifting strong girl, a highly athletic and explosive athlete like Serena Williams, Aryna Sabalenka, a CrossFit girl would just rip out of submissions, over power you, have the stamina and the naturally athletic mental psychological instincts for body mechanics.

A BJJ player's best chance is to catch the stronger, more athletic person when they are cold, arrogant(underestimating), clueless, etc. But again, there are levels to cluelessness. Generally speaking, we shouldn't underestimate a highly athletic person's ability to more or less get techniques right from instinct and transferable skills/techniques from other sports/activities.

I agree with all of your points, and it's obviously true that after a certain point athleticism and physicality do beat training.
To be fair however it's also true that in an environment where slams are allowed she would also beheave differently from the get go.

She would not just flop to her butt to pull guard and even if she ends up on the bottom she would be concerned about preventing getting lifted, in this video she didn't care about it because in sport BJJ you are protected by the no slams rule so she had no reason to let go of the triangle she was locking in or to open her guard in the first place.

There are many extremely effective techniques to prevent a slam from the guard that too many people forget about and that are paramount to learn if you are training for self-defense, such as hooking the leg or even better opening your guard to go for double ankle sweeps or leg entanglements.

Even something as simple as letting your closed guard or submission go while you are already getting lifted can work:
[Only Registered Users Can See LinksClick Here To Register]
(altough you are supposed to prevent them much earlier)

For example you can see how in the second round he could have not lifted and slammed her even if he wanted because she took him down by rolling for a leg entanglement, which is a position you can't just physically slam someone from.
He had some previous grappling experience so he knew the correct way to stop her heel hook attempt but if he were completely clueless I'm not sure he would have been able to escape from it.

By the way that's why I always said that if slams are allowed and you face a a much stronger and more athletic opponent you should not hunt for submissions from closed guard (too high of a chance of getting slammed) but you should go for single leg x guard and leg entanglements instead.

Stopping slams is a skills itself and it's a shame that most martial artist neglect it nowadays, BJJ players and even MMA fighters included.
