Default Sankaku chokes

It is not hard to find pictures of sankaku jime, e.g. from judo matches, but most of the time I can't tell whether it is a choke or a simple immobilization, especially since an immobilization is enough to win the bout in judo.

I would like to understand how the sankaku should be done for it to be a proper blood choke submission, and pictures (not necessarily from judo matches) would help a great deal.

To get the thread started, here is a nice sankaku jime that doesn't look like a choke to me, but what do I know ?

That is the best Sankaku picture I've ever seen.
For it to be perfect I only wish there would be a man in the receiving end!

I made this a while ago.
For the blood choke to work the 'Uke' (the person receiving the technique) must be choked by the pressure of his own arm and the 'Tori's' legs.

Like poor Rupert in the picture below.

Thanks, that is informative. But can you say more about how one does it ? I remember being in similar holds and eating one of my shoulders but being only very mildly choked. Does the arm has to pass under the chin like in the classic triangle ? What part of the thigh presses directly on the carotid ? (on your picture it almost looks like it is the ass!)

It's a lot harder to be choked if the arm is caught in between the legs. When there is no arm caught and it's just the neck being squeezed, then it's a lot easier to actually choke.

OK if by harder you mean that it requires more precision and care in how the choke is applied. But I think that a well-applied BJJ triangle is actually more effective when an arm is trapped, because the shoulder fits perfectly in the remaining free space. I thought it could be the same with the judo sankaku if the position is just right.

The 'choke' is not exactly a choke. It's more of a way to block the blood flow from reaching the brain.

Oh and one other thing. The BJJ Triangle choke and Sankaku Jime are one and the same. There is just a lot of ways to do it.

Some examples:

We have some wording issues here, so to make it clear, by choke I meant a blood choke, and by a judo sankaku I meant a reverse figure 4 with an arm trapped like in my first picture. Yes i know that sankaku just means triangle in japanese, but I thought that "BJJ triangle" and "judo sankaku" was a clear distinction for those who know the holds.

Under that distinction, my picture is a "judo sankaku" and your second one is a "BJJ triangle", while your first picture is still something else (not uninteresting of course).

The distinction is important to me, because I know how a blood choke by BJJ triangle works and feels, but the judo sankaku has never quite worked as a choke when we tried it. Tracyt's image looks like it could work though.

How about this sankaku? reverse triangle, good choke due to arm being pulled way across.
