Default Re: PFL Championships

Larissa might well do her worse next time. She's just coming into her prime... And now she knows it. Believes it.

The fight is now posted on PFL's YT page.

Scoring seems to be a unanimous 48-47 with the rounds likely awarded;

R1 Harrison
R2 Pacheco
R3 Harrison
R4 Pacheco
R5 Pacheco

Turning points of the fight were really in R2 at 9:35 Harrison goes for a takedown, but transitioning to a single leg, Pacheco gets onto the neck for the first real "scare". This is where we learn Pacheco is not afraid to grapple, and has clearly skilled up her BJJ and grappling. She loses the choke but winds up in side control. Harrison has to blow a lot of energy getting back to her feet and Pacheco gets the better of the standup when they're back on their feet.

12:06 Kayla gets caught with a punch that has her backing up. When she stumbles against the cage, I thought she might be about to "go" but fair play to Kayla, she shows her toughness.

R4 20:00 Kayla looking tired, sloppy and overly desperate for the TD. 23:06 eats 2 big punches. Again I'm thinking she might get put to the sword here.

Really the story of this fight is that Pacheco recovered ridiculously quickly between rounds and exchanges. Rounds 4 and 5 Harrison just didn't have the lead in her pencil any more. She could possibly have won rounds 1-2-3 had she not got her neck snared in r2 and lamped at the end of the round.

One of the MMA highlights of the year is the rekindling of the rivalry between Larissa Pacheco and Kayla Harrison.

Reigning champion Pacheco gets her 2023 campaign going this coming Friday against Julia Budd.

At this point, I expect Pacheco to get a first round T/KO as she has against many of her opponents over the past couple of years. Budd is a seasoned competitor, former Bellator champion and has fought many of the big names - Rousey, Nunes and Cyborg. She tends to lose against elite competition and this will test whether Pacheco is now in that class as I have a hunch Pacheco is now the golden standard in WMMA especially contested in the 155 weight class.

But the weight class this year is 145. How will that affect everyone all around? Brutal cuts for some.

Interesting developments in the PFL I have not been keeping up to date with.

It’s still unclear when Harrison will re-enter the cage and who will be her opponent, but the two-time Olympic gold medalist is expected to be part of the new PFL pay-per-view model.
With Cyborg out of contract in Bellator, it would seem she is an ideal opponent for Harrison under this format.

Looking at some of the specimens PFL has for their 145lbs womens "regular season" it just shows how the UFC has put absolutely zero effort into building their 145 division.

I had trouble with the video feed on the PFL fights last night, especially the women's prelims. But that was one hell of a KO by Amber Leibrock!!! She is hot!!! Also enjoyed the Pacheco/Budd tussle.

Honestly I expected Pacheco to stop Budd. It was a little bit of a flat fight. Perhaps 145 is too low a weight class for her and she is too drained. You could see a visible size difference in Pacheco's favour and Budd has spent her whole MMA career at 145 apart from a brief move up to 155 and never attempted 135.

Pacheco appeared to rock Budd at one point but didn't follow up. The commentators said she "didn't recognise" how hurt Budd was. I call BS on that. More like she didn't have the lead in her pencil -OR- the suspicious minded might suspect there was a plan all along for Larissa to carry her to a decision.

Unfortunately this game is riddled with corruption.

A couple of other interesting points during the weigh in... Larissa stated to Megan Anderson that she doesn't like the "Queen" moniker and prefers to be referred to as "the champ" as it's more "her vibe"... Perhaps "queen" is too feminine for her. I wouldn't be at all surprised if she doesn't like to identify as male outside of fighting.

It was Kayla that started calling herself the Queen of WMMA. lol.
