A rubber match is needed. It was a split decision and Rose finished looking worse than any victor since Anastasia Yankova took a split decision win over Veta Arteaga in Bellator.

Rose Vs. Wei Li is now a politically charged fight.

I used to think Rose was intelligent if a little weird. Now she jumps on the anti-Chinese bandwagon. Let's keep that out of MMA.

I agree the whole political world getting spun up into the sports world is a story without a happy ending

Wait wait wait.....

Quote:
UFC strawweight contender Rose Namajunas said she doesn't regret saying her opposition to communism is at least part of her motivation for her April 24 fight against champion Zhang Weili at UFC 261.

Zhang is UFC's first and only champion from China.

Namajunas' family is from Lithuania, and she said she has drawn inspiration from the documentary, "The Other Dream Team." The film focuses on the 1992 Lithuanian men's national basketball team, which entered the Barcelona Olympics as an independent country after the fall of the Soviet Union.

Namajunas recently told a Lithuanian outlet that the movie is a reminder that "it's better dead than red," an anti-communist expression coined during the Cold War. She also said Zhang is "red" and that freedom is a "huge motivating factor" for why she fights.

"If you're confused about any of my opinions, you can watch the documentary and you could get a good idea as to what my family had to go through, the reason I'm in the United States today, the reason that I do mixed martial arts, all of that stuff," Namajunas said on Ariel Helwani's MMA Show, which aired Wednesday. "I'd probably have a really different life if it wasn't for everything in that documentary, how Lithuanians had to struggle with communism oppression.

"The reason that I brought it up and that I referenced it is because the reporter suggested I had animosity toward past opponents, and that's what maybe caused some motivation in those fights, and in this one there's no animosity so maybe there's a lack of motivation. But that couldn't be further from the truth."

Namajunas, who shares the same manager as Zhang, repeatedly said her comments were not personal against her opponent. At one point, Namajunas said she views all of her opponents as "red."

"They're just the person standing in the way of my dream," she said.

Zhang recently expressed hope that she and Namajunas could be friends after the fight.

"I love Weili," Namajunas said. "I don't know her. I know she wants to be friends and all that stuff. It would be great to get to know her, if we could, if it's possible."
The concept of "communism" is a much different trigger for someone whose family escaped the type of communism her family had lived under. She's the first generation of her family to be born free following the communist era. Her family's home country had been annexed by the Soviet Union in 1940 and, according to truelithuania.com, most Lithuanians were not communist.

Even though that particular slogan (dead/red) is linked to a really trashy, generally uneducated element of American society, she's fully justified in having a fundamental opposition to communism which, to her, is Soviet-era oppression. I agree that she could have used differently phraseology to make her point about communist China, but I'm a 50 year-old nerd and wouldn't expect a 28-year-old fighter to recognize why a more nuanced statement would have been more appropriate to the situation. I'm also speaking as someone who's never had a global platform where millions of people are going to read a headline and then automatically decide which "side" they are on.

Zowie, huge head kick shot by Rose drops Weili early in 1st round, Rose jumps on her semi-conscious opponent with hammerfists and it's over!

It was a perfectly timed, Karate-style kick from the lead leg. No wind up, not much power but accurately slapping the jaw with the bridge of the foot.

You can see Wei Li was knocked momentarily unconscious from the way her legs give out. Sometimes you're only out for 0.25 - 0.5 of a second but it's enough. The jarring impact of the fall wakes you up again and you're still going instinctively and don't realise you were knocked out.

Added after 9 minutes:

Rose is a bit like Conor in round 1. She'll get tired and slow down by the end of the 2nd, but she's very hard to live with in round 1. So fast and agile, and is an expert distance controller with her movement. Very springy legs, able to jump in and out and land these kind of fight-ending, touch of death shots.

Rose at her best is like a surgeon fighting with a scalpel. You barely even realize you've been cut before the blood comes rushing out.

It's no guarantee she'll win her first title defense or perhaps the one after that - matchup questions aside, it's unknown how she'll hold up mentally as champ - but when she's on her game, it's really pretty to see.
