Default Video Transfers

Looking for advice. I have roughly 25 private sessions on 8mm camcorder tapes. My camcorder doesnít work anymore, and Iím wanting to convert to an external hard drive. Have researched some services that provide video transfer, and itís fairly expensive. Plus I have concerns about sending this content to even a reputable company. Any input on personal experience, whether itís purchasing some equipment to do it myself, is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I never captured 8mm tapes but I have some knowledge about video capture.

If you have a video capture device, find an other 8mm scope on amazon or ebay with which you can playback your tapes. Be sure you can plug it to your video capture device. (Usually with a fire wire cable or RCA) - This is definitely the less expensive solution.

If you don't have any video capture device, you will want to use an analog-to-digital converter that can read 8mm tapes and record them on a digital device like a usb thumb drive or sd card. I think you can find some on amazon for a couple hundread dollars.

Hope it helps :s

What does "camcorder doesn't work" mean? You can't watch it on the camcorder, you can't watch it on tv/computer with the necessary plugs, something else? If the tapes are fine, but not the camcorder, there are some pretty cheap 8mm camcorders on Amazon you could buy as a means to transfer to computer.

Many years ago I had some videos on a camcorder that I put onto my computer for posterity via Adobe Premiere. But I had to split it into a bunch of small clips and re-combine due to audio sync issues since one end was 29.97 fps and the other end was 30. I don't remember all the details, it was probably over a decade ago.

Moving forward, I suggest you buy a more modern device.

I wouldn't give the tapes to someone else. Companies may not care, but people are people.

Thanks for the input. Might just need to try and find a new battery, but could possibly find a used camcorder with a battery that works.
If not, will check into the options listed.
