Mats or on the bed
Can you have a good semi comp match on a bed? Or is it better to wrestle on mats? In what are the chances of getting a mat burn?

For me, MATS all the way!
Yes, you will get mat burn. That's part of the fun IMO |

Re: Mats or on the bed
For me, mats too.
I only had 5 sessions on a bed or mattresses out of about 500 in total and it wasn’t much fun. If you are in the bottom position on a soft mattress you are stuck like in concrete and barely able to move. In addition to that you are sweating much more than usual. Mat burn is depending on the mats. I once did rent an Aikido dojo and got a terrible mat burn. I often do 10+ sessions over the weekend, sometimes more than 20 hours but a mat burn wasn’t an issue. I don’t use protectors. |

Re: Mats or on the bed
A king size mattress is OK for semi-comp but definitely not for comp. With mats, I guess it depends on the type. I've never got mat burn.

Re: Mats or on the bed
My wife and I almost always use the bed because we have to resort to the privacy of our bedroom. It's a big one and our matches are playful and staged, so it's not a big deal.
But the few times we've done it in the living room on a rug have been a completely different story. The freedom, not having to be overtly careful about falling out of the bed or getting a head hanging with moves that have us both spread or moving around a lot, etc. Of course, there were rug burns. We don't have mats because we have no use for them. But, yes. I have dreamed about living in a house with a basement or a big enough room that gives us some privacy late in the night when the kids are asleep and putting mats on its floor for the ultimate matches. |

We started out on the bed, but eventually got mats and it makes all the difference
A lot more room to move around |

Re: Mats or on the bed
yeah mat burns happen and it's difficult.
when u r on top bed is easy. when u r on the bottom bed is difficult. so beds are difficult for competitive matches but for semis beds r ok |

Re: Mats or on the bed
Nothing is better than mats if you want some competitive indeed. Mattresses offer no firmess enough to enable pins escapes. But that may be what you are looking for: a cotton-like cloud that would pin you as much as your opponent :-)
