Re: Mixed judo from the past
The army's latest batch of new recruits have just finished 6-weeks of basic training. As is now tradition, they're separated into two groups (by gender) for a friendly passing out competition. After yomping around the countryside; marching on the parade ground; shooting on the range; and signals testing in the classroom, the scores are tied. They need a deciding event.
The male Drill Sergeant wins the toss and selects his 'banker' - Unarmed Combat in the Gymnasium. But being out of touch with Civvy Street, he didn't know Judo lessons were now compulsory for all schoolgirls. Oops! It doesn't take long for the male recruit to be flat on his back. "I hope I haven't hurt you Big Guy" says the young Mistress of the Gentle Art. "That's my girl!" thinks her blonde Sergeant. |

Re: Mixed judo from the past
Michael Palin expects better from his second recruit. Wrongly. Meanwhile, his female counterpart simply stands to attention, looking like a Swedish Olympian waiting for her Gold Medal [1-13].
There's just one more point needed for a female whitewash, and they want to finish with something special. "He's going to run at you too, so flip him with a Tomoenage." says the confident blonde [14]. "Got it, Sarge - OK to roll through afterwards for a verbal submission?" "Yes, and the louder the better." |

Re: Mixed judo from the past
Today I'm going back even further for some real vintage stuff. A couple of gentlemen customers are surprised to find a lone female bar owner, especially in the notorious Pigalle District of Paris. Isn't she scared of Les Ruffians without doormen around to deal with them? [1] Then, by chance, two troublemakers arrive [2]. They must be baddies because they look swarthy and probably speak French with North African accents .
And soon it kicks off. Our girl dashes cat-like to the customer side of the bar, turning her target into a towelhead as she menacingly moves in [3]. So that's why she's so confident: Go Go Judo Girl! She throws him to the ground and stands above his body, daring him to continue [10-11]. And yes - the idiot wants some more. It may seem like she's delivering a right hook here [14], but she's actually throwing him again - this time towards the exit. The other customers hold him back to save him from further punishment. Job done, she turns towards the bar - unable to hide a broadening smile of satisfaction [17]. She never looks for trouble, but it's physically stimulating when it arrives. "So, you were saying something about me needing protection?" [18] [BTW: It's definitely the actress herself in all of these images - I've seen a couple of shots from the rehearsals.] |

Re: Mixed judo from the past
I regularly do a bit of research on the ladies in my threads; sometimes to see if they have genuine skills, but often just out of curiosity. And the French judo girl above turned out to be one of the more curious I've come across. It seems Colette Duval's fame came not from her acting career but as a Skydiving Paratrooper.
So her self-defence expertise probably results from a military background. Anyhow, this is a picture thread so here are a few more: Three web photos of that scene (I preferred my own, to be honest); a couple of official portraits; those 'Behind The Scenes' rehearsal shots I mentioned; and, finally, the DVD source. |

Re: Mixed judo from the past
Beautiful woman. Lovely judo. Thanks for a great post.
All great pictures, but especially like the very first picture of Honor Blackman in a dress and the beginning of a shoulder throw. I have never seen this picture before and I like very much. I wonder now that she is sadly passed on if more pictures like this of her showing her judo skills will emerge. I hope so. |
