Default Bruce Lee's Gym Card - 1965

As I've said on here before, I'm a big fan of Bruce Lee. I own all his movies as well as some books and documentaries.

This however is new material on me - his gym card from May of 1965. Bruce would have been 24 years old at the time, turning 25 in November of that year. It's authentic and is an excerpt from the book 'The Art of Expressing the Human Body' by Bruce Lee, edited by John Little. It can be found on Amazon if anyone is interested.

I've included a picture of Bruce from '65, showing he'd obviously been training for some time (he began Wing Chun age 16 under the tutelage of Ip Man).

Everybody knows Lee was a fitness fanatic and brought a ripped muscular physique to the screen when actors of the time didn't. Lee's physique, coupled with his martial arts skills and speed in comparison to his contemporaries led people to believe Bruce Lee was much, much more than a man of entertainment. That his skills were world-class and the level of strength from that taut, hardbody was super-human.

As this authentic piece of memorabilia shows, in reality Lee was not a particularly strong man at all. There is nothing on here that a decently trained gym-goer (male or female) couldn't best. For those of us that lift weights, his 95lb squat for 3 sets of 10 is particularly underwhelming. There are many teenage girls stronger than that.

Wow, interesting find!
But isn't this is an exercise routine? If so, it tells us nothing about how much he could actually lift. Besides, he was a small guy, so, we shouldn't expect breathtaking max numbers either.

Thanks. They are not one rep maxes but I assume he was pushing himself in the workout.

When you're doing a standard 3 sets of 10 reps, you'll typically keep a couple of reps in the tank on your first set and then have enough to complete the 2nd and 3rd sets which will become progressively harder due to fatigue.

We can use a 1 rep calculator;

...and calculate what his one rep max might have been. It comes out at 127lbs.

As I said, when you're doing 3x10 you'll typically leave a couple in the tank on your first set so not to completely exhaust yourself. Let's be kind to Bruce and say if he went all-out on his first set, he could get 15 reps at 95lbs (that's a bit of an exaggeration IMO if he was stopping at 10 but I assume he could get 12).

15 reps at 95lbs would give him a 1 rep max of 142.5lbs (64.5KG).

The most likely theory is that drug reactions caused swelling on the brain.

You can read the account of his death on his Wikipedia page.

Chuck Norris has also talked about it numerous times in attempt to clear up any confusion.

What's often not talked about was that Lee had been rushed to hospital with similar symptoms before - collapsing and suffering seizures - months prior to his death. So either he had some underlying health issues, or was not taking good care of himself regarding getting enough fluids, adequate rest and usage of drugs/medication. Dehydration and possible heat stroke have also been mentioned as possible contributing factors.

Damn, there was a hundred theories about his death. Lots of them got weeded out with Internet. I remember one of the theories was that Bruce Lee got violent with an escort, who killed him in self-defense.

Yeah, there are loads of theories - that his death was faked - another prominent one.

Lee's lack of size and strength makes it kind of preposterous that some people still think he could - at any point in his life - have beaten today's top WMMA fighters and well-trained athletes. Big, heavy set women like Valerie Adams or Shelby Vaughn would likely have their way with little Bruce based on size, strength, athleticism and robustness of build alone, despite those women having no fight training. There's no way I would have accepted that when I was a teenager. The thought of my hero being out-muscled, rag dolled and humiliated by a woman would have had me crying myself to sleep.

But Lee was certainly getting to be rather sickly around the time of his death. Gaunt and skinny. Apparently he'd work, sometimes, for 24 hours straight, getting severely dehydrated in the process. Likely using a cocktail of drugs including cocaine and opiates.
