Before the internet!!!
There was a time long ago when fans relied on the written word and the pic's that came with it.Often they would search far and wide for publications like these many of which would be collectors items today.

Re: Before the internet!!!
Yes, I remember those dark days also. People like Judell and others filled our needs. I remember ordering photo sets from her and checking the mail box until they showed up. Then came the age of VHS tapes ;0. That was like being there with the girls - almost. After years of photos and super 8 film, it was wild to hear the women's voices and sound of combat. Now with YouTube and down loads we don't need to check the mail box anymore.

Re: Before the internet!!!
One thing I do remember is some of my first 'get togethers' was having an old VHS tape of Lori from B&J Videos best matches. I can't even find any photos of Lori around anymore which is sad because those movies were arousing as hell, especially when watching them with the lady I was going to be taking on. Lori would go bare-ass and after seeing her in action it was impossible to start MY match unexcited! I always wanted to thank Lori! Anyone have any shots of hers?

Re: Before the internet!!!
Even before "Before The Internet"....
There was a U.S. magazine called "Gay Book" - even before "Gay". Most issues of this magazine published during the 1930's contained letters describing women's and mixed wrestling bouts (mostly imagined, I suppose). Photos were often included. Ivy Russell, for example. I think that these were lifted from the English magazine "London Life" of the same era. Fiction included stories like that of the following cover. Another relevant publication was "Skill Magazine", which sold photos of circus women flexing, Joan Rhodes, etc. and also had articles about such women. A British magazine. I didn't scan a cover. One of the turning points in this interest came in the early 1960's. One distinction of the internet is that it can "narrowcast" - good and bad. Most magazines catered to advertisers and tried to broaden their readership as much as possible. So if you have a copy of "ACCORD" and magazines of that type, you will find articles on transvestites, etc. But a person named Peter Van Duyn, whom I never met, but I did meet his ex-wife Tina Woodley once, started publshing "The Pallas Journal". This was a step towards featuring strong, muscular women. Later he started an even narrower publication, named "Women's Physical Culture" I've included a scan of the first page of Volume 1 Number 1. The original page is 14 inches high, too large for my scanner and I have split into two scans. Van Duyn didn't have much original material, but was helpled along by Al Thomas and Orrin Heller. In some of his later publications he featured some mixed wrestling with current women. The circus was also a source of material. Women acrobats in particular. Did you know about the magazine "World Acrobatics"? I have no idead who operated "Peerless Sales", but this company offered cartoon stories and photos and some 8mm films of strong women. He published many early Stanton works. What is hopefully attached is an example I haven't seen elsewhere onthe internet. By "Glen". Also that sometime contributor BOS was busy publishing stories. He should invest in some OCR software and try to get them out in PDF form. Even if the softwre is only 90% accurate, it's much easier than re-typing the entire stories. Many, many other little publishers. WOM, for example, just featured letters and stories. I think the title means "Women Over Men". I don't want to publish my scans on websites, then post via HTML links. Just going to try to link to my PC via attachments. I recently upgraded to a 4k monitor and have sized these at 1200 pixels width, which still seems small to me. I have done some correction WRT white and black levels in order to remove some fading and yellowing. First try to upload failed. Files too big. I shall lower the JPEG quality from "12" to "8" and that should do it. |

Re: Before the internet!!!
Thanks very much for including me (BOS).
Peerless was the best thing going when I came of age in the mid-'60s. Incredibly expensive and not widely known about, though. I remember Physical Culture. I was simply astounded to see so many muscular women. I wondered if they were making it up somehow. It was SO far removed from almost anybody's imagination. Also remember Accord. But I don't remember much being there that was of interest. I think it attracted interest from mixed wrestling fans mainly because finding our kind of stuff was so difficult. Forgot to say I also remember WOM very well. The fellow who ran it and I corresponded. I would love to know if he's still around. Last edited by cashley216; 07-May-17 at 06:16. Re: Before the internet!!!
I got into this fetish in the mid or late 1990's. Well, that's when I REALIZED it was a fetish other people had, and that it was an industry of sorts...
I was in a newsstand and noticed a copy of Fighting Females magazine. Robin was on the cover. I still have that issue and maybe one more in a box. Some day I will scan them if anyone cares. Anyway, that led to me going online (but the Internet was really in its infancy then..I remember Tempest had a site, Joan Wise, Green Eyes, Am Fem, and Robin's site...) But the magazine is really what did it. The rest, as they say, is history. |
